Is this fast enough for online games?

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place.
These are the results of my speed test:
b5qqfn.png

The only online game I've tried playing with my internet is Halo 1 multiplayer, I get between 200-300 ping on it. I'm guessing that's because the official servers have shut down, and I'm playing on unofficial servers located in the US?
Will I be able to expect performance similar to this speed test if I'm playing on Aussie servers?
(Note there are usually two other people using my internet).

Solution
You are mostly correct since ping is mostly a measure of distance so bandwidth does not matter. The reason people are concern about bandwidth though is if you try to send more data than will fit in the connection the ISP will place the data into buffers until it can send it. So if you download big files the ping traffic will have wait its turn to use the connection. The ping time will include the waiting time in the buffers. This problem is called bufferbloat.

It all depend what you are doing with the connection. As long as it never gets to 100% usage the ping times will not be affected. Now you can have this overloaded connection problem any place in the path with connections between ISP routers. This is why the ping...

Why are you trying to use your cell phone internet?

I'm not trying to use my phone internet, where'd you get that from?
This is using my home internet, it's the best I can get where I live in rural Australia.

I know that my download/upload is pretty slow, but isn't ping more important than download or upload speed when playing online games? 27 ping is supposed to be pretty good from my understanding.

Usually when you run a speedtest it searches for a server nearest to where you live. When you are joining a game server it may be 5 to 10 times farther away then the speedtest was. Those internet numbers and ping are going to get worse online. You may be able to play but the experience is not going to be fun

For example, my internet speeds are 1,000 down and 1,000 up with a ping of 1 when it searches for a local speed test. If I were to try and join a gaming server from Australia my speed test would probably drop down to about 200 and my ping would probably be somewhere in the 300 area

Don't most games let you connect to a server that's in your country?
If the game lets me connect to a server in Aus, the furthest away servers I could find had a maximum of 100 ping. I play Halo with 200-300 ping and I find it perfectly playable, I still manage to be one of the top players most of the time.
Running a speed test on an American server I got 243 ping. So if I can play Halo at 200-300 ping, shouldn't 100 for other games be fine?

But when I play Halo on US servers the ping is almost identical to the 243 ping in that test, so that can't be right.

Some games only show the one way result, others show the full round trip from your house to the server and back. The older Call Of Duty from years ago would show your round trip. The Battlefield games would only show one way.

This thread is old now, but I decided to post a correct answer to this question since there weren't any and now I've actually tested games with my internet.
I went to a friend's house and downloaded some multiplayer games, I ran them fine with my internet.

They were all perfectly playable, I had no issues. Keep in mind this was all with my 1.84Mbps download and 0.61Mbps upload internet, while 3 people (including me) were using it at once.

Latency range:

  • Halo 1: 48-80 ping Aussie servers, 150-450 ping American servers
Halo 2: I don't think it shows ping, but it's very playable on all servers. Don't notice any lag.
Halo online (ElDewrito): 30-90 ping Aussie, 150-400 American
Insurgency: 35-80 ping Aussie, 150-350 American
Average latency (ping I normally get):

  • Halo 1: 48 ping Aussie, 270 ping American
    Halo 2: Unknown.
Halo online: 40 ping Aussie, 250 ping American
Insurgency: 55 ping Aussie, 250 ping American
Note that the highest ping on these tests don't usually happen. Halo 1's 450 ping on American servers is only a very occasional spike (I mean a few times a week or less), it drops back down pretty quickly. The highest American pings on Insurgency and ElDewrito are only a few of the worst servers, virtually all other servers are fine.

And btw, I've gotten significantly better internet now (see below), and guess what? The ping results are exactly the same as when I had my slow 1.84Mbps download internet. So that goes to show that higher download speed doesn't necessarily mean it's going to have better ping.

There are alot of times that you are not going to see the effect on your PC, it's the others playing on the server that will notice it. If we split the difference between your 150-450 ping you're getting somewhere around 250-300 on US servers it's the others that will actually see your character lag or "teleport" across the screen while your moving.

Keep in mind your results are based on VERY old games that that don't require much data and were even playable on 56k dial up back in the day. Try your internet on a game like Battlefield 1 and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Just for giggles, I started playing Call Of Duty 4 again and I see people with bad internet teleport across the screen. From there end they said they didn't even know they were doing that. I can post video of it if you want so you can see what others see from their end.
