Hi,

I'm running widows 7 on a Dell PC. When I click on the services tab in windows Task Manager, I see over 100 processes running. How can I tell which process are essential and which are just using up resources? Most of the processes are Microsoft.

Thanks,
Lynn

Googling is right. I use https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/download to help keep my start menu from getting heavy. I run it and click on Tools and then Startup. I go through each list including the context menu which if bloated can become sluggish. I can disable or delete items from the start menu which in turn won't end up a process if it isn't running. I also keep Windows Services disabled that I don't need and change some to manual if I might need them...

I also keep Windows Services disabled that I don't need and change some to manual if I might need them. http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-7-service-configurations/ is one starting point. Still you can't take Viper's word for it until you know YOU don't need it.

There are so many Carnival Rides and so many carnivals. Do you use a printer regularly? Think Spooler. When you have about 100 carnival rides that you need to get ready before Windows is ready things get molassesey.

Be aware that the task manager changes you make won't be permanent unless the service responsible is disabled. Some essential, core, M$ processes will auto-restart after they are disabled in the task manager.

Have you made a System Restore point yet? Now's a good time to make sure it's on and you have a new point created prior to trimming the fat from your PC.

Thanks for replying. I did a Google search. There are so many articles. I'm not sure which ones I can trust. That's why I posted here.
