8pin -> 2 x 6+2, XFX XTR 550, 1070TI 2x8pin

With XFX XTR 550W comes one 8pin -> 2 x 6+2pin PCI-e power cable. Is it OK to use this single cable to power a 180W TDP 1070TI card that requires 8+8 pin power? Assuming slight OC (but nothing extreme).

Solution

Not a good idea with a higher end card.

If it has 2x 8 Pin connections it can pull a lot of power, well over 240W...
I have to plug in both power connectors. IF you only plug in one than most of the cards give an error message and wont let you boot up or go into safe mode whichs locks the card at 300mhz until you plug the second power connector in.

To keep in mind: TDP is not the power consumption. Its the rated heat output of the card. Since not 100% of the power that you feed into the card gets turned into heat the power consumption is higher then the TDP! So a 1070ti will consume more then 200 Watts of power even with a TDP of 180.

OK, i think there seems to be a misunderstanding here. The cable im talking about is:
-8 pin on the PSU end
-two 6+2 pins PCI connectors on the other

Im planning to put both 6+2 into the 8+8 of my 1070TI

Taking into account that:
-PCI slot can provide about 75W itself
-regular 8 pin cable can hold 150W easy
-There are 2 6+2 connectors on this cable so i assume it was supposed to be used to power 2 cards or 1 card w/ more than 8pin

Im more worried about whether the cable can take it or whether there are some particular ground/12V configurations that would fry my graphics than the amount of power coming in.

You need a new PSU that has 2x Separate PCIe cables, normally 650W PSU's have enough cables.

sorry. misunderstood/misread. It's not recommended but usually OK. The math of 150+75 is correct.
