Hi Tom's Hardware,
My PC just failed and I've browsed the forum for solutions but I can't seem to find one. Here are my specs:
AMD FX 8350 4.4 GHz Black Edition (had for around 6 years)
ASUS M5A97 R2.0 (does not have integrated graphics, used for 6 years)
GIGABYTE R7 370 2GB DDR5 (had for around 3 years)
G.SKILL ARES 1600MHz 2x8GB (had for around 2 months)
EVGA 500W 80+ WHITE (had for around 3-4 years)
So here's the timeline:
To start, my PC was working fine for over 6 years. About two months ago, my PC started randomly not turning on when I pressed the power button. I upgraded my RAM and then 2 weeks ago, my PC would turn on after an average of 5 tries of pressing the power button meaning that it got progressively worse. I saw that all the fans were on but my peripherals + monitor would not turn on. It seemed to be all random, so I tried resetting the CMOS, which fixed it for a while. It would turn on most of the time but it would still randomly sometimes not turn on with this fix. While I was on my computer, I would hear a sound that resembled a switch being flicked, and then my screen would blackout for 2-3 seconds and then turn back on. This was random as well, because it would happen while gaming and doing word processing
Then I didn't turn it on for a week, and computer stopped turning on completely. The GPU fan stopped spinning as well and peripherals would still sometimes not turn on even if the GPU was unplugged. I have my power strip that is always "on" connected to my PSU, so I don't know if could that have been a reason why my GPU/PSU broke. I've also had this PC for a very long time so I can assume that is a factor for it breaking.
I've narrowed it down to being a GPU problem (obviously because it doesn't power in my friend's computer), but I'm also suspecting a PSU problem because the peripherals don't turn on. I was thinking the PSU could've shorted out my GPU but I have no idea at this point because my computer went from turning on to not turning on when I didn't use it for a week. I'm refraining from buying a new GPU just yet until this problem is confirmed.
What I've tried:
- resetting CMOS
- reseating RAM
- reseating GPU
- unplugging everything except keyboard and mouse
- different HDMI and power cable
I would be extremely thankful for any help or tips on this issue.
