Need to buy new MOBO and CPU, can RAM upgrade wait?

Hello,

I have this big upgrade planned. Currently, I have this setup:

  • Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D
    GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1080 Ti
    RAM: 2x4 GB, 1600 MHz, DDR3
    CPU cooling: Corsair H115i
    Seasonic Prime 80+ Gold 750W

Unfortunately, my MOBO (AsRock Z97) died cause of a water damage, so my i7-4790K has no place to sit in (could be dead too as far as I know). Therefore, I figured that it's a good time for a major upgrade.

I want to buy these items:

  • i7-8700K
MOBO - I have several favourites - Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 7 (possibly 5) or ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X HERO
2x8 GB, DDR4, 3200 MHz RAM (for overclocking purposes)

My budget allows me to buy only CPU and MOBO at the moment, not the RAM. I know that my current RAM is very weak, so I'd like to ask if it will hold the rig for a few months. Also, will my PSU be sufficient for the rig?

Thanks in advance.

All generic tips on my situation would be appreciated too :)

Solution

The DDR3 won't even physically plug in. The positioning slot is in a different place, for exactly this reason.

Wait, so if I assemble the i7-8700K, Z370 MOBO and my old DDR3 RAM, the PC wouldn't run at all?

no, DDR3 doesn't meet the power requirements of the CPU. if you manage to get your DDR3 installed in the Z370 mobo you may risk damaging your CPU

I want to stick to Intel because I mostly do flight simulations and the platform benefits mostly from the single core performance - which Intel units do much better as far as I know :) Am I correct?

with 1st gen ryzen that was the case but with ryzen 2 the per core performance is pretty close to intel CPU's now

This Motherboard is more than capable of,overclocking and meeting all your expectations. Those motherboards you mentioned are expensive.

I'll definitely look into that, thanks! Unfortunately, all parts are more expensive where I live :(

Thanks for the tip. It indeed is cheaper. My question is, what do those expensive ones have that this one doesn't?
