Hi everybody,

On Amazon DE, it seems that the:

"Crucial mx500 ct500mx500ssd4 500 GB 3d nand SATA M.2 Type 2280ss Intern SSD" is around 80 euro while the

"Crucial MX500 Interne SSD, harde schijf, 6,4 cm / 2,5 inch, 3D NAND, SATA, zilver 500gb" is about the same price.

Since my mainboard will be a ASROCK B450 (new build) i was wondering what to pick since the M.2 2280 might be faster ? It's almost the same price so what is best to pick then?

Any thoughts?

ok thanks so i better go with the m.2 drive then since its the same price.

I think my mainboad asrock b450 has an ultra slot and a normal m.2 slot, this goes into the ultra then?

What is precise model name of your motherboard? You have to read specifications of the motherboard.
Not all M.2 slots support sata drives and usually using sata M.2 drive will disable one sata port on motherboard.

Benefits of having sata M.2 drive are -
  • you don't need cables to connect it and
you don't need any additional space in pc enclosure for it.
Everything else will be the same as using regular 2.5" sata drive.

@SkyNetRising

Would be an ASROCK B450

says:

1 x Ultra M.2 Socket (M2_1), supports M Key type 2242/2260/2280 M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x4 (32 Gb/s) (with Summit Ridge, Raven Ridge and Pinnacle Ridge)**
- 1 x M.2 Socket (M2_2), supports M Key type 2230/2242/2260/2280/22110 M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s module and M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x2 (16 Gb/s)**

Does that mean is can put that M2 2280 from Crucial in the ultra m2 slot?

That is not full model name. Asrock has 5 different B450 models.
  • B450 Gaming K4
    B450 Gaming-ITX/ac
    B450 Pro4
    B450M Pro4
    B450M-HDV
You can put sata M.2 drive into slot, that supports sata M.2 drives. If specification doesn't say anything about sata support, then it doesn't support sata.

Oops, yes i'm sorry.

I would be the B450 PRO4.

I would first go for the B450M PRO4 (mini atx) but since the non M is only 10 euro expensiver i better go with the B450 PRO in atx form.

Ok now i understand it a bit better :)

So the m2 mx500 (SATA M.2 Type 2280ss I) will still be a (bit) faster than the 3D NAND, SATA because the first is an M2 interface?

I looked at the samsung evo but thats about 50 euro more and i'm not sure if that will be much faster and justify its price tag?

No. The same.

Probably not.

The difference will not be noticeable in gaming tasks, a 970 nvme drive runs approximately 3500mb/s 2500mb/s read write, the two drives your talking about perform at around 500mb/s read/write

But for gaming the performance is nill, if your doing editing/cad etc workstation style tasks with large file sizes you may see some improvement, for gaming their should,be any noticeable difference.

Ok thanks for the info!

So what should i pick best then if i stick with the Crucial? The SATA sdd or the M2 SATA SDD?

Am i correct if i place a M2 SATA SDD i wont be able to use the M2 Ultra NMVE later (since i might block the space?) while if i put a SATA SDD i might still use the M2 or M2 Ultra?

Crucial P1 would be faster than MX500. It's NVME drive.

No. Not correct. You can't put sata M.2 into "Ultra" M.2 slot. It will not work there. Told you that already.

You put sata M.2 SSD into second M.2 slot (M2_2). First M.2 slot ("Ultra") remains free and you can use it for NVME M.2 SSD.

The m.2 MX500 and the SATA MX500 will run at exactly the same speed.
Just a different place to plug it in.

Which specific Samsung EVO?

Crucial P1 costs approx the same as the Samsung 970 EVO. Thats around 50 euro more then the mx500 and the m2 sata.

I dont know if that justity its price tag if i wont do any CAD/etc.

If i stick with the mx500 or m2, what should i pick best? Use the m2 slot or a sata 6 slot? (Since speeds will be the same).

Thnx

You have to decide it yourself.
2.5" sata is universal. You can use it also in a computer without M.2 slot.
M.2 sata is more compact, requires less space and no additional cables.

the mainboard says this:

1 x M.2 Socket (M2_2), supports M Key type 2230 / 2242 / 2260 / 2280 / 22110 M.2 SATA3 6.0 Gb / s module and M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen3 x2 (16 Gb / s)**

*M2_2, SATA3_3 and SATA3_4 share lanes. If either one of them is in use, the others will be disabled.

So if i use the non ultra m2 slot, i lose sata3_3 and sata_3_4 as well?

If i'm not mistaken i do have 4 SATA3 slots:

4 x SATA3 6.0 Gb / s Connectors, support RAID (RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 10), NCQ, AHCI and Hot Plug*

but when adding a ssd in m2 slot, i only have 2 sata3 left?

While if adding the normal mx500 ssd, i still have the m2 slot free and 3 other sata3 slots?

Alright, isn't it then better to just use one sata6 port with the mx500 (non m2) ? I then still have 5 left if i dont use the m2 sata. If in the future use the m2 nvme port, then i dont lose any sata3 port (while using the m2 will lose me again 2)
