Fallout 76 crashes.....time for upgrade?

Started playing the game while skyping with a friend and every so often the whole game and skype crash. I tried turning down the graphics and closed Chrome windows...same problem. I turned off everything but the game (including Skype) and it doesn't crash; could it be that my current system is just not cutting it?

System as it stands now:
i7-3770 3.4GHz CPU
CM Hyper 212 EVO Cooler
Asus P8H77-V MB
16GB DDR3 RAM
Samsung 830 EVO 256GB SSD
1TB WD Black HDD
EVGA 1070 ti FTW2 (OC'd) GPU
Seasonic Focus+ 650W Gold PSU
FD Define R6 case
Auria EQ276W 2560 x 1440, 60Hz monitor

As you can tell, I have been incrementally updating; my plan during next year was to upgrade to a i5-9600K (or 8600K) with appropriate other components.

Is it probable that my current system is just not powerful enough? I built it about 6 years ago.

Thanks for the help. : )

Is that the only game you experience crashes on? If so I'd hold off has the game is newer and probably just needs to be fixed (in time). As is I would run it with everything but the bare min for programs so you can at least play it.

If you need to use Skype could you use it on your phone or a tablet to communicate with your friend?

If you have the itch to upgrade thats fine.

That aside, if your system was stable both hardware and software wise, no game would cause it to crash despite capabilities. Mind you 3770 is still a decent processor.

Fresh install of windows is in order if you beat that itch to get your fingers dirty.

Try disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome/Firefox.

I've run into issues with WoW and FFXV crashing due to Chrome and FF hogging a large chunk of VRAM, disabling hardware acceleration fixed those issues for me. I'm guessing Nvidia has driver bugs in how it handles using system RAM as an overflow buffer when multiple processes are trying to hog VRAM.

Thanks for the replies, guys.....not in a great hurry to upgrade, although I did know that my PSU, GPU and case were way out of date. I also thought that the CPU was ....ok for now. The only game I am playing atm is FO76.....it seems to run ok as I noted in my post.

I think just to see what happens I will turn up the graphics to ultra, but my sense is that this is not a graphics problem.....no?

Shouldn't be, unless it has some background mode where at least part of it keeps running in the background such as for running notifications like a lot of software does these days. Steam, Twitch, Skype and a bunch of other things use GPU acceleration for their UIs too, but they shouldn't use enough VRAM to be an issue - at least they aren't for me.

If nothing else works, a clean OS install may be in order.

Just ran it until the server shut down, and seemed ok....on ultra settings with GPU OC turned off and all windows closed (no skype).....it seems that skype might be the straw.....will test again.

thanks again; you guys may have saved me a substantial upgrade....for now...lol

If Skype is the culprit then I'd run it off a tablet or phone under your monitor for now, just connect it via wifi so your not using data.

I am pretty sure it is the cause (other than maybe system)...FWIW, the system requirements on the box lists i7-4790 as minimum, which initiated the original post.

Anyway, we are just using cell phone calling for now.
