[SOLVED] Build a 1440p, 60 FPS rig

Hi all,

I am a PC gamer looking to upgrade my build. Before I go any further, I must clarify I am quite a novice with limited knowledge and understanding of the various elements and parts that go into building a PC, and that’s my primary reason for reaching out to this community for help!

My current build is around 3 years old and was made scouring advice from the internet and a couple of friends. The specs -
CPU: i7 6700 3.4 GHZ
GPU: Nvidia 960
Motherboard: Intel Z170
Power: Antec 650 watts
RAM: 16GB DDR
Storage: 250GB SSD + 1TB HDD
Monitor: I hooked up my system to my TV, a 60 inch Samsung LED.

I live in India and am now moving to Hungary, and I figured this would be a great time to upgrade my build. I’ve been reading a lot about the various parts of the PC and while this has helped clear a lot of doubts and confusion, it’s also added to some questions!

I’m not really into FPS games and spend most of my time playing RPGs. In the last few years, I’ve been played games like the Batman series, GTA, Far Cry, Metal Gear Solid, Assassin’s Creed (currently playing Odyssey and FIFA. I also play smaller budget titles like The Inside and Ori and the Blind Forest, though since they don’t usually need a powerful system, not listing too much here.

On my new build, I’d like to be able to play the above mentioned games in at least high settings if not Ultra, ideally at 1440p, and I’m hoping to get some advice on a few key elements - the GPU and the Monitor, to make this happen. I also want the build to be future proof enough so that I can upgrade my GPU in 3 years and hopefully use the rest of the rig the same way for 4K gaming.

My current idea for the build, and my concerns/questions on some of the elements. This is already a high cost build for me and I’ll have to make an extra effort to save enough for this.

Objective: Achieve 1440p at 60 FPS for RPGs. Be future proof for 4K gaming.

CPU: i7 8700 3.6 GHZ
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070ti / RTX 2070 / RTX 2060 when it launches (Cheapest option for 1440p gaming would be ideal)
Motherboard: Z390 Aurus Ultra ATX LGA 1151
Power: Supernova G3 850W
RAM: Trident Z RGB 16GB DDR4-3200 (2x8GB)
Storage: Samsung EVO 1TB (for the OS and installed games) + 1TB HDD (for other downloads)
Cooling: Corsair H100i v2 liquid cooling
Case: NZXT H500 ATX Mid tower
Monitor: Any TVs for 1440p gaming at 60 FPS?

My concerns with the above build are:
1. With Nvidia launching the RTX range of GPUs now, I’m really not sure what to go for. Plus, I read some articles on the increase in costs of all GPUs because of the trade wars with China, so not sure if it makes sense to wait a month or two and then get the parts to build the PC, or spend now?

2. With the RTX range out now, and RTX 2060 rumours as well, is it wise to spend on an RTX GPU like the 2070, or, save some money and get the GTX 1070ti? Quite frankly, the 2070 costs more than I want to spend on a GPU right now, but, if it's the right way to go, I'd consider it. I am quite ok with not having ray tracing considering how new it is and not many games support it, but I would like to get 1440p at least. And since I don’t play FPS, I’m not chasing 100 FPS. If the 1070ti can get me 60 FPs or thereabouts on 1440p for AC Odyssey, I’d be quite happy with it! Is that asking too much from the 1070ti? Also, would it support VR games, in case I want to try and get a VR headset in the near future?

3. My PC will basically be for gaming and watching some movies. I’m a casual gamer, and prefer sitting on my couch, in front of a large screen and game, rather than use a smaller gaming monitor. I am aware of the the input lag and refresh rate issues on TVs, but I also see some companies are working on this and some TVs have started addressing these issues. Again, since I am not into FPS games, a little lag will not lead to a poor gaming experience, will it? Ideally, I’d like my screen to be around 50 inches, but, if a monitor is required for the kind of experience I am looking for, I would get a smaller size monitor (40 inches) rather than a larger TV.

Hope to get some great advice from all you out there!

Stick to your 50inch TV that you want to play with since you're not much bothered about FPS games. There are no TVs to my knowledge that are specifically 1440p its either 1080p or 4k - doesn't mean the the 4k TV can't display 1440p I've done this myself. Get a TV that's 4K and HDR compatible. That way, you can play your games at 1440p and enable HDR on games that support it (provided that you use a HDMI 2.0 cable) and experience your games with vibrant colours it really makes a difference. As a bonus, you will also benefit from any bluray HDR rips of movies that you might have stored on your PC.

The 1070ti is perfect for 1440p at 60FPS provided you optimise the game's quality settings. Don't get too hung up about Ultra vs Very vs High...

Don't get too hung up about Ultra vs Very vs High etc. In many cases, ultra adds very miniscule detail to visual fidelity but at a massive cost performance. There are many optimisation guides for modern day games that show how to maximise visual fidelity without sacrificing too much performance.

But not all games on the xbox one x output 4k even if the console can. Besides, the xbox is only able to output 4k on some games by reducing graphics settings. If he really wants to play 4k on the 1070ti now, he probably could by reducing graphics settings the same way the xbox does - the difference being that at least with the PC he has the freedom and flexibility to do so.

One could argue though that as soon as the PC is used on the couch, and on a TV and budget is an issue a Console is a more economical and practical way to go. I don't like console controllers (Though I do have 2 consoles that I dont use myself) but if I didn't play any action games and just played RPGs the console controller is actually not too bad.
A 1070ti costs as much as a console and we havent even bought a CPU RAM etc yet, just saying. No need to start the console vs PC fight it is just an option, which seems to fit in this case, I also game on PC but mostly because it is 144Hz and I need a mouse for proper gaming. But if I didnt need that consoles do actually make sense.

In that case yes, if budget is an issue then Xbox One X is the way to go for 4K couch gaming. Otherwise, I still think PC is a viable solution for 4K gaming whilst relaxing on the couch :)

Thank you for your advice guys! I do think one can enjoy PC gaming on the couch, but the cost and convenience of a console is definitely something to consider. Seems like the 1070ti will serve my purpose for now and I can look at upgrading later when 4k gaming becomes more mainstream.

Thank you both for your help!
