nothing worked. I was prevented by some of the fixes due to:
I cannot update as admin because xp asks me for password but there is none. i am user and admin on my machine. I cannot install latest windows update agent as it says it is already installed. is there a way to force install it? if so that will also help my sp3 and ie8 for i am sure i am missing dlls. launching update from command line did not work http://support.microsoft.com/kb/245142 wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow
hosts file I replaced and tried again but no luck. there are # entries for all sorts of servers, along with the bad websites, i guess that is ok? here are my microsoft sites
# [Microsoft via various]
# [Microsoft / MSN Ad Servers]
# [Microsoft][AS8075][207.46.0.0 - 207.46.255.255]
# [Microsoft / aQuantive][AS8075]
# 127.0.0.1 clk.atdmt.com #[disabled affects MS downloads]
# [Microsoft / aQuantive / Accipiter]
# [Microsoft / aQuantive / Accipiter][122.248.157.0 - 122.248.157.255]
# [Microsoft /aQuantive][64.74.197.0 - 64.74.197.255]

please look at the one that affects ms updates. is this entry enabled or disabled?
the 403 access forbidden error does not come up all the time justv sometimes, but same denail of updates. th webiste acts like it is downloading and regisrering some update software but this is a loop that keeps going. i tried relaunching after that in case something needs to take effect but nothing. i even shut down and start up and try again. I've been at it for hours today and many days in the past 6 months. My windows is legal and I have even been validated and downloaded some microsoft freebies. but cant update. should uninstall IE8 and try for IE5 is this issue is affceting that I dont know. but i rather hget updates for safety sake. i feel the one article i read about sp3 being so large that it overwhelmed the installer and wiped out some things. i have received missing file notices and tried to replace them from downloads but to no avail. any help is much appreciated

none of them worked. I wonder about uninstalling IE8 and going back to IE5 because I read this issue has affected IE8,7,& 6. Yet I have XP sp3 and I read you can't uninstall IE8 if you have sp3 so if I was to uninstall sp3 problem is I have no disk for this used computer I bought. Is there a way to 'force' install? I had done it once and dont know where i put my notes for the command line. I googled forcing install but tried the results and they did not work. any advises are appreciated

Hello: Currently I'm using IE 7 + window XP pro & Sp3

But I'm Browsing the Internet all the time with Opera & I never
visited MS windows update to update & when the update is available
a small icon pop-up in my task bar & ask me whether I want to Install
the Update or not

my point is I don't know why you very concern about
Microsoft window update & IE8 also I'm not sure the
downgrade from IE 8 to IE5 will fix your issues with
MS window update

Finally If nothing work for you

do the following:

1) install windows 7

2) If you want to keep win XP then you can backup everything & start all over

3) use IE 7 instead of IE 8

4) Use Opera or Firefox or Google for browsing

Oh well :
