Wired internet connection not working

I don't know what is wrong with my computer. I'm on the internet through a wireless connection on the same desktop that has issues connecting with a wired connection. It's not the router because I've plugged the ethernet cord into my laptop and the network is detected just fine. I'm running windows 7. When I click diagnose it resets the local area connection adapter. Then it says to reset the router, I skip this step because I'm pretty sure that's not the problem. It then tells me Local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration. How can this be fixed?

Perhaps by Resetting the Router -- resetting the router will make it initialize itself and the connections which should fix any problem with an invalid IP configuration - which is probably why it suggests doing that !

Tried all that, thanks for the suggestions but I figured it out. Turns out the ethernet port on my motherboard went bad. So I had to install a network interface card and it was good to go.
