Microsoft Pauses Windows 11 22H2 Rollout Due to Gaming Issues

Microsoft’s Windows 11 22H2 update launched for the general public late last month and brought several new features and bug fixes. However, not long after the Windows 11 22H2 update went live, Nvidia GeForce users complained about sluggish and unstable frame rates in games, lag and rampant CPU underutilization (with some users seeing rates as low as 5 percent).

Microsoft has heard all the complaints and is taking steps to limit the impact of the performance issues on Windows 11 users who haven’t already downloaded the latest update. The company acknowledged that “Some games and apps might experience lower than expected performance or stuttering on Windows 11, version 22H2.”

According to Microsoft, a software bug causes apps and games that rely on the GPU to trigger debugging features that aren’t meant for consumers. Unfortunately, this bug is causing the steep performance drops that gamers are seeing.

For its part, Microsoft says that it instituted an update hold on Windows 11 22H2 for system configurations that are affected by the issue. So, if you haven't already installed Windows 11 22H2, it won’t be pushed to your system via Windows Update until Microsoft has deemed the issue resolved. Microsoft also warns against manually upgrading using the Media Creation Tool or the Update Now button in Windows Update to circumvent this Windows Update safeguard.

If you have already installed the Windows 11 22H2 update, Microsoft gives general guidance on ensuring that your games and apps are up-to-date. The company also stated, "we are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release." However, Microsoft didn’t provide a timeline for a software solution to this issue.

While Microsoft works behind to scenes to address the underlying Windows 11 22H2 gaming performance issues, Nvidia has already released GeForce Experience software that fixes the problem.

So I need to create an nVidia account and install GFE to fix the issue for now?

Nvidia already fixed the problem so it doesn't matter whether you have GFE installed or not. If you never had GFE installed, and it sounds like you didn't, then it never was a problem in the first place. If you read the article, directly under the title it says "Nvidia has already issued a fix for gaming performance degradation, but Microsoft still needs to address the root cause. " The fix they issued was an updated GFE. The way GFE interacted with 22H2's newly exposed gpu debug was the problem.

Isn't the issue considered a "feature" by Microsoft?

Please tell us any new OS release or OS update, that had zero problems across all installed systems.
    Windows, Linux, Apple, Android....

    Just one.

Just another reminder to delay upgrades and updates for a reasonable amount of time as it has been since the days of Windows 10's introduction.

They still don't know what's causing it. I've managed to find at least 10 other random people with slow performance, hanging, and micro stuttering. Tabs take a second to load. This is happening with ALL apps and games even with the latest nvidia drivers, no GE, and with Windows apps such as Task Manager. Rolling back 22H2 fixes the problem. My Windows Update recently started showing this update is held back for us. (Ryzen 5900X, RTX 3080, 32GB, SSD, no Geforce Experience)

So i decided to give W11 22H2 a try.. I freshly installed the OS, optimized all settings for performance and privacy, removed extra unwanted software and I set it up as my daily driver.
So far performance wise, it is similar to W10 in application performance, but there's a slight animation delay that is sometimes noticeable, and its not as snappy as W10.
So I was kinda fade up with the performance hit and I wanted more performance, so I switched back to W10 22H2 after using W11 for 1 month.
When it comes to gaming, performance is sluggish and inconsistent. W10 is much better for 1% FPS and it just feels snappier and faster in every click.
I love W10 bc its simple, fast, no nonsense features and gaming performance is noticeable better. W11 feels unnecessary.. yeah, i know it does look better design wise, but functionality/stability is what matters the most to me.

Completely untrue. Maybe this applies only to gamers but I don’t see it.
