Google has teamed up with AMD to develop one of its 10th-generation TPUs, according to a note by SemiAnalysis (via Sean). Analysts at SemiAnalysis believe Google may be interested in AMD's CPU cores for CPU-heavy workloads. If accurate, the collaboration would mark AMD's first major involvement in a custom AI ASIC project and could indicate that Google is exploring a new kind of TPU that combines its proprietary accelerator technology with on-board general-purpose cores for CPU-heavy workloads.

That's surprising, but Google does partner with Broadcom on TPUs as the article notes, and Samsung for Tensor SoCs.

If Google make their excellent TPU price competitive respect to NVIDIA GPU and via AMD will provide X86 compatibility, it might get interest in general public.

But users will also win if AMD include Google TPU into their EPYC server chips to be able to run local AI

Is x86 compatibility needed? Google has sold TPUs to the general public before, like Coral.

If they put a TPU on a PCIe card, do Intel or AMD need to do anything to support it?

Nvidia will provide x86 compatibility as well, soon™

Just like with the intel deal, amd does not get to make whatever they want with the tech, they just get orders to make what the customer wants.

This is about on package though, everything integrated so the end user only has to worry about one thing.
