Samsung announced the availability of a new monitor that aims to reduce work-area clutter by incorporating an integrated wireless charging function, a feature Samsung claims is "the world's first" for PC display technology.
Samsung's SE370 monitor is a 23.6-inch Plane-to-Line Switching (PLS) panel that runs at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz with a 4ms response time. Although these specifications aren't particularly noteworthy, Samsung's new display is FreeSync compatible and features an all-new wireless charging area integrated into the monitor's stand, which makes this otherwise run-of-the-mill 1080p display much more appealing.
The Samsung-patented PLS technology is very similar to IPS displays, offering bright and vibrant picture quality with wider viewing angles than TN panels. This particular display's brightness is rated at 250cd/m2 with a contrast ratio of 1000:1 and a 178-degree viewing angle. The monitor can be connected using D-Sub, DisplayPort 1.2 or an HDMI 1.4 port, and comes in a glossy white.
The charging area itself is located on the base of the monitor stand, underneath the screen. Devices supporting the Qi inductive power standard can be placed on the panel for wireless battery replenishment. Samsung claims this innovation will not only declutter workspaces, but also save consumers money by eliminating the need to purchase an additional charging device.
With only the base specifications (1080p, 60 Hz, 4ms response time), this display wouldn't be a top choice for enthusiasts looking for smooth gameplay. However, FreeSync support offers a compelling case for the SE370 as a high-quality 1080p gaming monitor. In addition, Samsung says the display's game mode detects changes in scenes and instantly corrects blurry images by enhancing colors and altering contrast for improved visibility. Not too shabby.
The Samsung SE370 is available now for pre-order at Newegg with a price of $249.99. These pre-orders will ship on November 13 when the monitor is officially released.
