sTec Rolls Out S260 mSATA SSDs

sTec, which was recently acquired by Western Digital, has released its new s260 mSATA SSDs, which are intended for embedded applications where space is a scarce commodity. The SSDs are crafted particularly to withstand harsh environments, and can thus withstand temperatures from -40° to 85° C. They also come with sTec's patented PowerSafe technology.

"Designers are eager for easily integrated SATA drives that can withstand harsh environments and don't require frequent replacement -- and it's those very conditions where the performance and endurance of these new s260 mSATA drives really shine," said Zack Mihalis, vice president of product marketing and management, sTec. "Our heritage of drive performance and reliability, along with the high demand for this popular format in the industrial, networking and telecommunications markets, makes this a logical extension of sTec solid-state storage solutions."

The SSDs also feature more reliable SLC or eMLC flash memory and ECC (error-correction coding). The SLC units have write speeds of up to 250 MB/s and read speeds of up to 500 MB/s.

sTec has released the units in capacities ranging from 16 GB to 200 GB; they are already available through sTec. The units with SLC flash carry a five year warranty, while the units with eMLC flash come with a three year warranty.

I personally fail to see why someone would want this unless they live in Alaska or Dubai. Dubai it wouldnt even really be necessary since most standard SSDs are good up to 130-140F so youd have to leave your pc running out in the desert sun to really need this extra protection and the other stuff in your computer would fry before the hard drive would anyway.
