The Wikipad gaming tablet has been available in the United States since June. Now it seems the company is finally ready to give folks in the UK a look in, as the tablet is apparently due out in the United Kingdom in late September. This is a tad later than the 'later this summer' had originally promised for the UK launch, but better late than never, right?
WikiPad this week announced that its 7-inch tablet will be available to UK consumers on 27 September, 2013. When it finally goes on sale, it will be priced at £249.99 (compared to the €299.99 for the rest of Europe). Wikipad is promising availability at several well-known retailers but has yet to name names, so we'll have to wait and see on that front.
"This UK launch is a significant milestone for Wikipad, as it represents the growth of Wikipad's fanbase beyond the US and outwards to the millions of gamers who love to play games on their mobiles but are looking for a better experience than other tablets can give them," said Fraser Townley, President of Sales at Wikipad Inc. "Our retail partners in the UK are as excited as we are at the potential for Wikipad to offer a real alternative for consumers and gamers who want the power of a premium Android tablet combined with the superior experience of a dedicated gaming device."
Wikipad 7 Android tablet packs Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core SoC clocked at 1.4 GHz, 1 GB of DDR3 RAM, 16 GB of storage, an SD card slot for 32 GB of extra storage, a front-facing 2-megapixel camera, and dual-band Wireless-N and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. The 7-inch IPS screen provides full 5-point multi-touch functionality and a default resolution of 1280 x 800 (16:10 ratio), powered by Google's Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" OS. The tablet also includes a micro-HDMI port that allows gamers to pump the action straight to their HDTV. Other hardware features include a 3-axis accelerometer, an e-Compass, GPS (including GLONASS), built-in stereo speakers, a built-in microphone, a 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack and a microphone mini-jack. Of course, the standout feature is the removable controller, which adds analogue sticks and directional buttons.
