my sony vaio e series VPCEB46FG laptop's internal hard drive is crashed. Can we buy same specified HDD from market or ARE WE FORCED TO BUY HDD FROM SONY ONLY.? It is too costly there . I can remove my HDD in a minute and replace , no problems associated with removing. The specifications are WD 5400 RPM

Solution
You can change it in a Sony Vaio PCG, so probably it's posible in every Vaio.
Personally, I would take the risk, even if it isn't useful you have an HDD, I have had only one computer that didn't accept a new HDD, and it's a very old one.

Hi gaganhunt. First of all if your laptop is still in warranty I suggest that you return it for repairs, because if you change the HDD on your own, you'll probably void the warranty. If it's not under warranty anymore, you could buy the 2.5" drive you want as long as it's not thicker than it should be (the most common once are 9.5mm (0.37") but you should make sure what are the dimensions of your HDD so that you know it's going to fit). You should also see what's the maximum capacity that the motherboard supports.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

thank u sir for ur information. My laptop is out of warranty, its model name is VPCEB46FG, i5 processor, 64 bit, 4GB ram. Internal hard drive model name is WD Scorpian blue....WD5000BEVT 5400 RPM. How would i see that what's the maximum capacity that the motherboard supports.?? Please give me procedure. I even called WD tech assistance , they replied nothing will be changed, it can be replaced with WD green 1TB or blue 500 GB with BPVT/LPVT, they also said dont worry about bpvt/lpvt, they think my system supports. I dont know how sure they are. CAN i INSTALL 1 TB or should i go with 500 GB. can any1 check the dimensions of my internal hard drive model. I mentioned model name above. THANKS IN ADVANCE:)

Well if it's not under warranty you can go ahead and change it yourself. As for the hard drive - it's format factor is 2.5" and the dimensions are Height - 9.5 mm / Width - 69.85mm / Length - 100.20mm (you can check the specs of your drive here: http://wdc.custhelp.com/ci/fattach/get/278270/0/filename/WD+Scorpio+Blue+Specifications+-+72011.pdf). You can get a 1TB drive for this model of Sony VAIO, but I wouldn't recommend the WD Green drive, because its height is 15mm and probably won't fit physically in the laptop. You can get a WD Blue 1TB 2.5" - its height is 9.5mm which is standard for most laptops and the same height as your old HDD.
You can take a closer look at the WD Blue drive here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=800

Edit: About the difference between BPVT/LPVT - those are different models BPVT's height is 9.5mm and LPVT's height is 7mm

Hope that helps. :)
