What's the best CPU cooler for $100 dollars max?
I'm going to get a Intel Core i7-6700k, LGA1151, Skylake.

Right now i'm thinking about the Cryorig H7. Good?

Solution
The 3 mentioned cpu aircoolers are the all good, actually exceptional air coolers for the money.

Cryorig H7, Noctua NH-14 and Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo - take a pick, it´s just preferences really.
Personally I´m using 212 Evo, which is an awesome cooler, with the option to add another fan for even more cooling.

As Donkey stated above you will hit the Voltage wall before you get a problem with temps on the Skylake CPU's anything mid range could get you to 4.5-4.7Ghz without a problem, you could get something like the 212 EVO these are usually around $30 with mail rebates as far as im aware and will let you OC this much without and issue, if you want to spend a little more then your suggestion of the Crorig is a nice choice also the Noctua D14 is really nice at this price point too.

The hyper212 is a good cooler, but has drawbacks, the thing is tall, 160mm, so doesn't fit in many of the smaller ATX mid towers. It can also have issues with ram and is generally a pain in the ash to get mounted right. The Cryorig H7 is only one 145mm tall, has an offset design and is much easier to mount, as well as out performing the 212. The d14 outperforms both, easily, but because of its size, has the same issues as the 212, except has one of the best mounting systems in the business.

I'm getting an i7-6700k as well. People mentioned the 212 evo working great. I was thinking either dual fan 212x or the hyper 612 ver2. Is the V2 612 better than the 212 evo or 212x or are they all comporable. Will OC but not too the limits.

Basically, is the 212x or dual 212x plenty (4 pipes vs 6 pipers of the 612).

thx

Hi I am building a Skylake rig at the moment as well, and I actually got the 612 v2 and it will not fit. While mounting it, I can see that even before I try screw it on I have to push it quite a bit, so I don't want to bend my processor so I am going to try to replace it with a AIO - something along the lines of Hydro Series H55 or similar.

I actually went with the Hyper 612 v2 and it works great, idle at 18C but haven't really stressed it out yet. I will update when I have results however thing is as quiet as can be, literally can't hear it.

What's your ambient???!!! 18C is pretty low.

Okay since you asked...

That's the temperature in my finished basement. Had a brand new (Green) boiler put in to replace a 22 year old beast 10Oct2015. Because of incentives thru state of Vermont got a $1000 rebate for getting top o the line energy efficiency 95%+ boiler. ONLY PROBLEM IS, the thing is so damn efficient, it doesn't give off barely any residual heat!!! Now we have a chilly basement and it would be an extra $3000 to put in new baseboards down here, so not yet, lol!! The old one while being inefficient kept the basement at a perfect 70-72 and in the actual boiler room like 80 or so...perfect for drying off snowy cold and wet boots, clothes, etc. So, the basement now turns out to be the perfect location for keeping cpu temps low, haha.

So, yeah it's 63.8°F right now.

Just ran Handbrake at ~104% (4.12GHz) for over ten minutes, was a steady 62-64°C, so add I dunno 2-3 degrees. Oh and the idle now after the handbrake test is 23-26°C

Is this helpful???

Lastly, used artic silver 5 and the computer has been on for a total of maybe 5 hours total so it definitely hasn't been broken in yet, so maybe remove that extra 2-3 degrees once the paste settles in properly.

Why isn't 64 easy on the electric bill? I'm confused, technically wouldn't it be cheaper?

Oh I see what you mean. I don't cool the basement, it is naturally that chilly down there. So it's free cooling...even when it's 90 outside it doesn't usually go above 72-75

Okay so some updates. Remember I live in the permafrost :)

After computer running for a while and has been under load at some points but then idle for 5 or 10 minutes or so, idle seems to settle in around 23C.

Still trying to get my RAM to OC at proper speed but at:
Stock (2133) I can overclock to 4.5GHz and temps stay under 75C, and at 4.7GHz it hit 77C.
With RAM OC'd at 3000@1.35V 14-14-34, at 4.5GHz I got 79C and 4.7GHz got 80C.

This was all using Realbench benchmark and stress test, so not the crazy primer95 test yet, not really even sure I'm gonna do that. Also, it was for maybe 10 minutes at a time. I haven't had enough time to really set things up and let it go for hours yet.

Really should stay under 80C, right? So basically now that I know the temp limit, just keep dialing the cpu voltage down 0.1V until it isn't stable, then go back to the lowest stable value, right?

About 80C for stress tests, yes, but every chip is individual. 0.1V is far too much I'd step down in 0.005 steps, or 0.025 and then 0.005. In addition, there are other parameters to change, and I assume you are running Override, so you can go to Adaptive to get your idle back.
