85C too hot for my GPU?

My specs are in the signature.

My 290X is reaching 85C at 100% load, 40C at 0%. Is this too high and if so what can I do to help it? Bear in mind a year ago the temps were 74C at 100% and 37C at 0%.

This comes after severe performance drops. I thought it was just my CPU which was overheating (78C!), but I realised 85C was a bit high for the GPU as well...

Solution
Actually 85 degrees C isn't overheating since the R9 290X can survive up to 95 degrees. Like most GPUs they are usually capable of surviving temperatures of around 100 degrees C...

However, your CPU is overheating and should be below 70 degrees C really to be on the safe side. You may want to reseat the cooler/re-apply the thermal paste on the CPU or replace the cooler if the one you have now isn't very good.

So I shouldn't worry about the GPU?

And yes im planning on cleaning and reinstalling the CPU cooler tomorrow, along with thermal paste replacement. Is it possible for these CPU temps to be the cause of a huge performance decrease:
Far Cry 3 - 40fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 60fps (2560x1440)
Dirt Rally - 35/40fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 92fps (1920x1080)
Metro: Last Light - 30/35fps (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 72fps (1920x1080)
Watch Dogs - 20/30fps (!!) (2560x1080) benchmarks suggest: 60fps (1920x1080)
^^^^^All ultra/very high settings^^^^^

Yes don't worry about the GPU that much. If you can maybe install some fan control software such as: Speedfan and then increase the fan speeds for certain temperatures - this will lower your GPU/CPU temps (will work for both).

Speedfan:

Also yes it is likely that the CPU overheating could cause performance issues.

Thank you for your help! I will go over my CPU and also try out Speedfan.

Also, it says "SpeedFan can access the temperature sensors available on your motherboard and on your nVidia video card" --does this mean it won't work with my 290x? (I have other ways of measuring GPU temps, I was just wondering).
