PSU barely has enough watts, worth the risk?

I have recently been gifted a new graphics card, the problem is my build takes up 445 watts according to pcpartpicker (with fans keyboard ect) when my power supply only does 450 watts. Will this damage my parts or should i invest in a new psu?

PCPartPicker does overestimates, since it’s based on max TDP values for each component. Your system will never have every component at 100% usage.

Most of the power you system consumes is from the 12v rail, so what’s more important than the overall wattage is the delivery on the 12v line. It may only be 420w.

If your PSU has adequate protections, such as Over Current Protection or Over Power Protection, and is good quality, it shouldn’t damage components if your system pulls more than 450w.
However if you’re PSU lacks protections and/or low quality, it can damage parts.

What is your exact power supply and full system specs?

i5-7500
MSI z270 sli plus
HyperX Fury (2x4GB) 2400MHz DDR4
Corsair - VS 450W ATX Power Supply
gtx 1080 ti Asus Strix (new gpu)
HyperX Fury 120GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000LM015

the parts are sort of a mish-mash of handed down parts

There are 4 different variants of the Corsair VS 450. All of which are low quality. One has 1 PCIe 6pin connector and only 360w on the 12V rail, the other variants have 2 PCIe 6+2pin connectors but one can deliver 432w on the 12V whereas the other two only provide 408w.

I suggest investing in a higher quality power supply. For example the Seasonic Focus Plus, EVGA G2, Corsair RMx, Bitfenix Whisper, be Quiet Straight Power 11. 550w.
A better quality power supply will affect every components lifespan.
