I had a phenom II x6 1065t @2.9Ghz and no overclocking software for it. Unfortunately my 1 Tb hdd crashed with blue screen. So I'm starting fresh with new mono, CPU, ram, etc the CPU I'm getting is an Fx 8350. Both CPUs were am3/am3+ sockets. Should I have skipped buying the fx 8350 and reused my phenom II x6 1065t since it was still good?

I also recommend you just buy a new HDD and reinstall windows.

Now the Phenom is ok still, but it lacks SSE 4.1 so some games are not going to work on the CPU such as No Mans Sky, I know there are a few others, like I think one of the FarCry games if im not mistaken, their is a list somewhere.

The FX will be faster and it supports SSE 4.1 instructions and it can still game fairly well, though don't expect a huge jump, I would say the FX 8350 is about 20 - 25% faster than a Phenom II 1100T, so maybe 30% or so faster than your 1065t.

The FX CPU may also need a bios update on your motherboard before it will work, update your bios and you should be good to go with the FX.

If you're going to get a new motherboard, please just go for ryzen or 8th gen intel. It is a huge waste of money opting for a dead platform which was mediocre 7 years ago. While the fx 8350 seems good on paper, it uses way too much power, is essentially a quad core, and is beaten easily in single core by a pentium.

Given that you are on an AM3+ socket, going to an FX 8350 is a CPU swap away.

Switching to ryzen or 8th gen Intel is going to be new RAM and motherboard as well.

Performance gain from Phenom II x6 1065T 2.9 GHz to FX 8350 @ 4.0 GHz is considerable, about 50% more multithread and 30% single thread performance. However, the new AM3+ CPU may not the compatible.

AM3+ has one extra pin compared to AM3.

You are better off buying 1090T and OC, or else get AMD Ryzen or Intel builds

I was on a low budget and found the parts on newegg.com and the motherboard I bought has a Max ram capacity of 32gb. I had an Acer Aspire AX3400G-U4802 with everything Maxed out and only 8gb ram ddr3 which had a slim atx. Now I have a bigger case and 16gb ram @ 1600mhz, the Fx 8350, gt 720, a new 1 Tb hdd, and a 600w psu.
