what to buy for better download speeds

So what should i buy to get faster download speeds for steam games and have a less likely chance of lag in games.Im not sure what to upgrade is it the router or the modem or what to get that will give me faster internet?

The first thing to check is your ISP, that is typically your limiting factor in download speeds and latency.
If you arent getting the performance you should out of your ISP then you can hardwire to the modem and see if its different than the performance on the router, that will narrow down what it is.

Chances are, there is no hardware you can buy that will improve your experience.

If you're wired directly your router, the "internet speed" is dictated by your ISP and what you pay them.

If you're using WiFi, other things also come into play.

So....
What do you get when wired directly to teh router?
What do you pay the ISP for?
