Hi Guys - I've got a little cable tester which works great for testing cables when both ends of the cable are available.

Is there a simple tester for testing just one end though? (assuming the the wire goes through a wall to a router and is not easily accessible.) I just want to be able to plug something to see if the cable is "live". I'd use laptop, but the nic on my laptop is dead.

Thank you.

It depends what you mean "test". If you just want to do equivalent to plug a device in a cheap 4 port gigabit switch would likely be the simplest. Most have simple lights that will show the port is active and most have some form of lights to indicate 100m or gigabit.

There ya go. Not having a Ethernet NIC is no excuse, they are so cheap really all things considering. Get one with the 2 LED on the RJ45 though, those IMMEDIATELY tells you whether there is some thing LIVE on the other end.

Dude it occur to me an old switch will do the job. You got no old switch? even a 10mbit one? An old router, nothing? think hard.

Great thoughts guys. Thank you. The fluke isn't in my budget and I hadn't thought of a USB adapter for my ailing laptop. Thanks gain, this forum is the best.
