I don't see why a USB 3.1 controller wouldn't work in any system you plugged it into.
Only exception would be thunderbolt, but I'm pretty sure the thunderbolt cards that exist are supported on Z270 boards already. They usually have compatibility lists.
Aside from making your computer unusable, no, not really. Or do you mean to swap out your current CPU as well? In which case it would help to know what you have.

I mean upgrading the whole computer of course, sorry, I wasn't clear with my question. I am wondering if I can plug a PCIe card for usb 3.1 on the old Z270 motherboard or if I would need to upgrade to the latest gen system.
