i7 8700k overclock help - 4.8ghz, temps are waving

Hi Bodhi,

That's a normal behavior with the XTU stress test, it uses different instructions to stress the CPU so it means different temperature.

But reaching 80°C in XTU (not really stressing) is not really good.
As I said, XTU is a soft stress test not like Prime95 which will make your CPU reach 100°C with your config.

Could you give us your entire specs?

i7 8700k
Nvidia GTX 1070ti
MSI Z370-A Pro
3200mhz ddr4 ram
Not sure what the PSU is, but enough volts for all parts.

btw i have speedstep disabled and i haven't configured the intel software utility yet. Just changed the clock speed, cache, speedstep, etc.

Sorry to hop in so late, and be the fly in the ointment, but you really need to figure out what PSU you have. Overclocking a chip that draws as much juice as yours requires a high quality power supply. A low quality unit, even if it can, on paper, provide the voltage, could be a serious, even fatal mistake for your system. Melt-down, literally. You've spent a lot of money on parts, make sure the PSU is up to it.
Now, here's the first question when somebody asks about temps and overclocking. Have you taken control of the voltage(meaning it's not on automatic control)?

That's a good point. I don't know how to change the fan speed on it. there's different modes i know for sure, but i don't know the setting. it's watercooled with the standard radiator btw, the power supply is high quality.

That's a nice low voltage, your issue is on the cooler/TIM side of this. If you've put together several machines and are confident in your TIM application, then it's likely an issue of not enough cooler. Stock answer to cooling issues is always to remove the cooler, clean everything thoroughly and redo the TIM and then reattach the cooler, presuming you have a powerful enough cooler for the chip.
