ASUS Z170A USB Woes

I have an ASUS Z170A Motherboard...and it intermittently (of course) starts up without the USB ports working...reboot (or occasionally multiple reboots) gets them working again...
Also occasionally peripherals (Controllers etc) stop mid-session - again a reboot (usually) resolves the problem...
Any idea what could be going on here?

What happens when you disconnect all the USB devices connected to your machine and then power it up? Will it start without a problem?

I'm asking because USB 2 devices can leak current back to the motherboard, this is a condition that is tolerated under USB2 but can cause systems to hang randomly, at boot, or during use when used with USB3 ports. I encountered this very issue with a USB 2 HOTAS Flight Controller connected to a USB 3 Port on a Gigabyte motherboard. eliminating the flight controller corrected the problem.
