Just wanted to know if there's a way to move Windows to a new SSD without cloning it. And how to properly move certain programs and steam games into it too? Like as if I had to just move all my steam games and google chrome into the SSD.

Thank you for your time!

Hi, as far as I know there is no good way to move windows to SSD without cloning. One could think about copying the folders with permissions to the other drive and then create a virtual (linked) folder on the old drive, but this would probably not work and not really worth trying.

What i like to do is to clean up my HDD drive and then clone the drive to the SSD where the free space will be ignored and thus a 1TB boot drive can be migrated to a 256GB SSD as long as the data is less than the SSD's size.

In steam you can create a multiple locations on different drives for your games, here is a guide:

Google Chrome can be synced, and steam libraries can be detected.
Install windows to the new ssd, then reinstall Chrome and sync it from your previous system, install steam and point it to your steam libraries.
If you don't have steam on a separate drive, just ignore my post.

steam can backup your steam library.
apart from cloning there is no easy way to move select programs and the OS.

if you just want certain steam games, uninstall the unwanted games then backup the library.
you could remove anything unwanted from the windows install, then clones the system.
