Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Going Public November 3

Next news
5:50 PM - October 16, 2009 by Marcus Yam

L4D2 on Nov3.

Left 4 Dead 2 will be officially hitting the PC and the Xbox 360 in just over a month on November 17, but those who preorder will get a sneak peek at the demo early on October 27.

For those of you who haven't committed to buying it just yet, you will get your demo fix on November 3 for all PC users and Xbox Live Gold members (Xbox Live Silver members will have to wait another week after).

Valve said that the Left 4 Dead 2 demo will feature gameplay taken from "The Parish" campaign, set in the New Orleans French Quarter. The demo, like the full version, will be playable by 1 to 4 players over local or Internet connections on both the Xbox 360 and PC (with two-player split screen available on the Xbox 360). The demo also features all the new boss infected zombies and all the new melee weapons included in the full product.

Mark your calendars!

Sounds like a good time! I dig the twangy feel that the gameplay videos have given.

Let's hope this demo doesn't have the same connectivity issues that the first L4D demo had.

who needs a demo for a game that's almost identical to the one released last year?

I bought this game off steam and they said they would have the demo by October 27th. What's the point of playing the demo a mere two weeks before the actual game? Oh well, it better be good.

I'll give it a try but I probably won't buy, had my fill of zombies with Left 4 Dead already.

Ehsan W :
you wont be playing this more than 2 times....it's only single player

... No it isn't. Did you even read what it says? Or know what Left 4 Dead is about?

Really? Is that why the article says that the demo supports 1-4 players over local or internet connection?

I won't be buying this game anytime soon. i refuse to pay so much for what is essentially an expansion pack.

if valve gives it to me at 50% off i'll buy it day one...if not i'll wait then. i don't care how long it takes the price will come down one day.

Hmmmm....Demo about two weeks in advance. At least that's not as bad as a movie trailer or TV preview two months in advance.

I really like Left 4 Dead so I'm definitely going to check it out. I think it's out a little too soon, but if it's a good game, who cares? I think I'll wait until I've ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GAME to decide if it's worth the money or not.

Looks like a pretty fun game, but I'm prolly not gonna get it right off the bat. I'll wait till the price drops and more of my friends get it.

So what if it's nearly the same as the first one... didn't stop people buying Serious sam 2, the second encounter of Quake 2 or Halflife 2.

what the hell do you need a demo for?

have they added complex new rpg/rts elements to it?
is it now an airline simulator?
NO! its a F%^&ing ZOMBIEE GAME!
just need to write on the box:
"you are the only person who's not a zombie, you use this array of weapons to make it so your the only person who isn't a bloody pile of gibs!"

unless its the Australian version, in which case it would be more like:

"you are the only person who isn't living impaired. use strong words and your safety whistle to make all the bad people go away, so you can escape back to reality where no one ever swears, uses drugs, where blood doesn't exist and No one would ever even think of having sex, cause babies come from the hospital!"

If you can find 3 other friends, get the 4-pack. It's cheaper, about $35 per person.

  • The Left 4 Dead benchmark doesn’t allow us to capture minimum frame rates, but we can still see a lot of useful performance information here. The old Source engine might have been updated for L4D, but it’s still not very demanding. That's a good thing, given the fast-paced visuals in this title. All of the cards offer playable performance at 1920x1200, and even the GeForce GTS 250 solutions are playable at 2650x1600, which is a higher resolution than what most users will likely choose. With 4x anti-aliasing (AA) and 16x anisotropic filtering (AF) added, will we see the results dramatically change? Frame rates have lowered a bit across the board to be sure, but strangely enough, it’s the higher resolution results that haven’t changed much. Now the GeForce GTX 260 cards are the only ones fast enough to handle 2560x1600, the GeForce GTS 250 cards are handling 1920x1200, and the GeForce 9600 GT cards struggle with 1680x1050.

Let us know what you think about this in the comments section, but it was pretty clear that Vista was never a favorite, so we're hoping Windows 7 is a more popular environment in which to test. We can confirm that all of the games benchmarked here work in Windows 7. FS X did have occasional hiccups when loading a map, but restarting the app fixed the problem every time. It should also be noted that the GeForce GTX 285 OCFU Edition cards are clocked too aggressively for an SLI configuration; we had to manually turn the fan speed up in Nvidia's System Tools utility in order to keep them stable through testing. To be fair, we also had trouble with the Radeon HD 4870 X2s in CrossFire on Asus' P6T, where the top card doesn't get enough fresh air due to spacing issues. All power-saving options were left enabled so that Turbo Boost, EIST, and Cool'n'Quiet would function as intended in a production environment.  Benchmark ConfigurationBenchmarkSetttingsS.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky High Quality Settings, No AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, DirectX 10 / DirectX 10.1 High Quality Settings, 4x AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, DirectX 10 / DirectX 10.1 Resident Evil 5 Fixed Benchmark, No AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, DirectX 10 Fixed Benchmark, 4x AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, DirectX 10 Far Cry 2 Ultra High Quality Settings, No AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, Steam Version, DirectX 10 Ultra High Quality Settings, 4x AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, Steam Version, DirectX 10 Left 4 Dead High Quality Settings, No AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, Tomshardware Demo, Steam Version High Quality Settings, 4x AA / 8x AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, Tomshardware Demo, Steam Version Grand Theft Auto 4 Very High Quality Settings, No AA / Max AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, In-Game Benchmark Crysis Very High Quality Settings, No AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, DirectX 10, Patch 1.2.1, 64-bit executable Very High Quality Settings, 4x AA / No AF, vsync off, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, DirectX 10, Patch 1.2.1, 64-bit executable Flight Simulator X Ultra High Quality Settings, No AA / Trilinear Filtering, 20 fps target, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, DirectX 10 Ultra High Quality Settings, AA Enabled / AF Enabled, 20 fps target, 1680x1050 / 2560x1600, DirectX 10

  • These Left 4 Dead results are close, but the Phenom II X3 710 seems to have a slight lead over its competitors, likely due to an optimal balance between threading and raw clock rate. Grand Theft Auto IV shows better results with more than two CPU cores, but the Phenom II X3 and Athlon II X4 are locked in a dead heat.
