User Submission for QOTD Now Open!

Next news
8:30 AM - May 20, 2009 by Jane McEntegart

You guys might remember my asking you if you'd like to see user submitted questions for our QOTD series. After reading through your mostly positive comments, we've decided to move forward with that idea.

You put forward some good points. The questions would need to be moderated or filtered through us before appearing on the site. We'd also have to make sure there were no duped questions and that people weren't going to use it to ask for help because their question wasn't getting answered in the forums. We've taken everything into account and tried to come up with a way for you to submit interesting, thought provoking questions without subjecting you guys to pages and pages of drivel.

So here it is. We've set up a mailing address for the QOTD suggestions and we promise to read every single one (eventually), with the best ones making it to the site. You can submit as many ideas as you like, as long as they're genuine suggestions as opposed to useless junk. We promise to have at least one reader-submitted question per week.

Follow these steps and you'll be well on your way to making it to the front page of Tom's Hardware:

  1. Use your question as the title of the email
  2. Use the body of the email to elaborate on the question (150-200 words)
  3. Sign the email with your THG username (real name is welcome but completely optional)
  4. Send your suggestions to qotd at bestofmedia dot com

Just a couple of things to note. First off, if we use your question, we'll notify you in advance. There's no need to reply to the mail, it's just a quick thank you and a heads up so you know to watch out for your question. Rest assured we'll make sure your name appears at the end of the piece. Secondly, if needs be, we'll be tweaking or editing the 150-200 words you submit. We'll try not to get our dirty fingerprints all over it, we just want to make sure no lols ftws or werds slip through the cracks.

One last thing, do not spam. Just because we don't use it that often, doesn't mean we're afraid of the big red ban button. So be nice.

All suggested QOTDs that we use will be edited to maintain quality and relevancy.

Have fun you guys and thanks in advance for your submissions. Who knows, maybe we'll get something good that we can use before the end of the day.

Will you be keeping this article where everyone can find it easily? If you leave it like regular news articles it will drop off the list in a few days.

What about a "Poll of the Day"?

I'll keep bumping it each day to make sure it stays on the front page but only for this week. Don't worry, we'll include the email address at the end of each question of the day from now on. :)

What about a feature to see the results of the questions? instead of reading thru all the comments?

Make the qustions like 'what certs do you have' in a fashion where one can pick from a list or if they're not on the list add your own, and these will appear on the list for the next user. Then someone who isn't doing anything from your crew can make a nice little excel cake or something to show us the results summary later.
