Gearbox Software to Finish Duke Nukem Forever?

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Who wants to see Clap Trap in Duke Nukem Forever?

Duke Nukem Forever, while in limbo right now, isn't a completely dead project. Sure, work on it has been suspended due to the death of 3DRealms, but Take 2 owns all the assets publishing rights and probably doesn't want to throw it all away.

Who might pick up work on Duke Nukem Forever? According to Kotaku's sources, it could be Gearbox Software, which has a working relationship with Take 2 from last year's Borderlands.

Gearbox is supposedly picking up from where 3DRealms left off and will getting its name on the box with developer credit for its continued work. One source even told the gaming blog that it a playable demo will be available before the end of this year.

Gearbox should be no stranger to working on Duke Nukem, as the developer was originally set to develop the Duke Begins spinoff before it was scrapped.

Considering that some of the demo footage release from Duke Nukem Forever featured some of the same desert wasteland as found in Borderlands, the match with Gearbox could make the most sense.

No matter how good the game is, It won't be able to live up to the hype.
I'll still buy it though :)

Er, DNF is still in development 3DR didn't die they just shut-down, their parent company Apogee is still going fine, 3DR fired the internal development team but are completing the project with outside work, and Take 2 don't have the authority to contract gearbox to work on the game anyway (tho 3DR could and may be using them to complete it)

I saw the Duke at the store with Elvis. That's about what these stories and rumors amount too anymore.

The title says it all, Forever!! This title has been forever in the works and if completed it's going to equal a 10 year old looking turd of a game. the graphics look like a cross between Tribes II and the mentioned Borderlands. I wouldn't even let my dogs pee on this game...

Maybe they will release it by 2020.

Man, I wish people and the media would just ignore Duke Nukem stores and just assume it's a big lie. That's what it is, hence the name 'forever.'

I wouldn't mind if Gearbox did

So a Half life 2 clone? Coming in 2011? Maybe by then I will have forgotten about the original Half Life 2. Where are the strip club levels we were promised???

Meh, too little too late now so... I don't expect much out of it.

How can it even compete against the likes of

-Halflife2, Metro2033 and so on... those are just 2 titles that I enjoyed out of a saturated market.

It has to be quite epic and with the help of that damn Title of Duke Nukem... it has a small chance but don't think they will make it into solid gold.

If this does eventually happen it'll be awesome! Borderlands is up there on the list with my all time favourite games, and the humour in that game is right on par with good ol' Duke. Even if they just make a Borderlands with different skin you wont hear me complaining :)

This is kinda like Diablo 3. Gets delayed and drug along so much that you just start not to really give a frack anymore.

If they keep waiting... it will be a new franchise, because no one will have even heard of it!

Don't care. This game is already behind in technology.

Diablo 3 was announced in June 2008 with no official date of release set. So how you can even compare the game which was 10+ years in development and miss many release dates with Diablo 3 which is 2-3 years in development (typical for games esp of this caliber) and never even had a deadline???

Excuse me, but look at fallout 3. Bethseda completely scrapped the old engine and used the engine they used in oblivion. Last time I checked the game sold big. If this game is indeed using the engine that borderlands is using then it won't be the same engine that has been under "development" for 10 years.

Since when did Take 2 win the court case and own "all the assets"? AFAIK they both dropped suits. Publishing rights, fine, but that statement suggests they own the IP. Take 2 still retains publishing rights and can be a source of income. Seems logical 3DRealms and Gearbox entered an agreement with Take 2 sitting at the table since they'll be flipping any bills at this point.

They need to just publish this game, the expectations that it will be great is very low now. However, if they make a sequel to DNF that has no major obstacles and is release in a shorter time span, i believe that would be much better.

damn... Duke Nukem 3d is one of my all time favorite pc games. Sad to see the franchise go under. still, I would rather see it's end than have crap games made just to milk the cow a bit more.

Marcus, are you an idiot? Take 2 does not own the assets...

I won't believe that Duke Nukem 'Its Gonna Take' Forever is actually going to happen until they release a playable demo.
