DISASSEMBLED: The iPhone 3G S

Next news
2:11 AM - June 19, 2009 by Jane McEntegart

Over the last two weeks, the world wide web has been buzzing about Apple’s latest iteration of its iPhone, the iPhone 3G S.

Set to launch on June 19, we Europeans have time difference on our side when it comes to launches and our good friends at Rapid Repair decided to hit up an Orange France boutique that was scheduled to open at midnight. Once they’d secured the phone, they promptly tore the thing asunder to see what exactly Apple had put in there. Don’t worry, we’re sure the phone is fine. Being the CEO of an iPod repair company (not to mention supplying parts for PlayStations, Xboxes and Nintendos), the man at the helm of the operation, Aaron Vronko, is probably pretty handy with a screwdriver.

The aim of the game is to find out what’s different about the iPhone 3G S. Those of you who have been following news on the device know that most of the changes are on the insides and the outside looks pretty much exactly the same. We'll be talking to Aaron on Monday to find out what he found and how it differed to the iPhone 3G.

Until then, check out the pictures below and let us know if you'd be tempted to try this at home!

This isn't the entire gallery but if you want to see more, as well as read the step by step guide, head over to Rapid Repair and check out their iPhone 3G S Repair Guide.

Anyone in the U.S. or Canada planning on lining up in the morning for this? I actually might. It's time to upgrade the old 2G EDGE iPhone. :D

I'd get one of these if they were half the price.

I'd get one in Canada, if I didn't have to pay a hundred dollar phone bill a month for the privilege of using it.

My phone bill is $32/month. I plan on keeping it that way.

In my country a iPhone(old one not the new) cost almost US$1100(plan included) so most people buy just to show off, good thing the carrier pretty good. Oh well i guess i must happy with my Nokia 5800 eh?

Very useful information for iPhone users i think. Thanks a lot. I'll definetely keep my $40 phone bill until something (hopefully) better comes out next year with a good plan/rates. I'm tired of being stiffed by Sprint/AT&T.

I want to see a comparison of the Cortex A8 + SGX graphics core, vs Nvidia's Tegra and Qualcomm's snapdragon...

Please, TH?!

Most likely anything in the 3rd world.

I went to Argentina a couple of months ago and they were asking for $500 dollars (once converted) for a PS2....that's a 2, not a 3. I told my cousins that I can get it for them for $100 in Canada and they couldn't believe it.

Keep in mind, these people don't make the same money we do, they make less so its even more expensive when you consider everything.

Thought the photos are nice - it doesn't tell us too much since it looks like the regular iphone. Guess i'll be waiting until monday for the actual juicy info.

The iPhone 3G is $600 or so in Australia. Not overly expensive compared to some countries but still a truckload of money for a phone. Nokia 3310 FTW!

I think the country mentioned should be Malaysia...
I live here and the price is completely ridiculous that I'm sticking back with my Sony Ericsson G900 only...

Paoyean, get a budget plane ticket to Hong Kong. Spend a few nights, see the sights and pick up a 80G PS3 with game for HK$2880. What's that in US$, well about US$360. And that's through the official Sony Style shop!
3Gs iPhone will be out next week. 3G iPhone is going FREE for a 24 month contract with a monthly plan of HK$299 (US$37) that includes 500MB HSDPA data plan a month and more talk minutes than you could ever use. If you want an inifinite data plan, it's only HK$399 (US$50).
