Report: Apple to Start Selling Unlocked iPhone 5 Tonight

Earlier today we reported that the iPhone 5 is now in stock on Apple's website and that the waiting times for online orders have improved. However, it seems Apple also has plans to start selling an unlocked version of the iPhone 5.

9to5Mac cites sources that say Apple will begin selling the unlocked iPhone 5 via its online stores as early as 9pm tonight. Pricing is said to be $649, $749, and $849 for the 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models, respectively. If you're not big into online shopping, these sources apparently said that this unlocked iPhone 5 will also be hitting retail stores, though the release date is not yet known.

Apple currently sells the iPhone 5 on contract through AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. Customers have a choice between 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models, which are priced at $199, $299, and $399, respectively.

    i dont really think these unlocked phones would sell much at all like previous gens. if people here remember a year ago, everyone and heir mothers had an iphone. today I was in college wondering about this, I look around me and I see everyone and their mothers have galaxy S3s. its rare to see an iphone 5 in my area. a more expensive off contract phone wouldnt really help sales in my area.

    I know dozens of people with iPhone 5 and 3 with Galaxy 3. One of them got it because Blackberry died 2 month before iPhone 5 release and he could not work without a phone for that long.

    Wondering how many iPhone 5's were sold this quarter, likely between 40-50 million devices.
