Steve Jobs: It's Time We Design Our Own IPhone And IPod Chips
The market potential for proprietary mobile processor designs from chip makers like Samsung Electronics and Intel Corp. were dealt a considerable blow earlier this week when Apple chief executive Steve Jobs revealed that his company will start designing its own breed of chips to power the next-generation of Multi-Touch devices that won’t be available to rivals.

Ouch. A great idea though if he can pull if off.
Of course he can pull it off, he's Super Steve Jobs!
yeah, if he can. i'm sure big blue will have something to say about it. good luck to him.
I don't know if they are talking about just designing the chips or also owning the manufacturing plants but either way its not an easy thing to setup in-house. I don't know how much sense this makes for them.
No I don't think Apple meant to say they're gonna build their own Fabs. Do like most small chip makers do. Design your own chip and have a company in China build them for you. Stamp and Apple iChip logo on it and wala!
Well a little while ago Apple was out purchasing chip development companies, so they've already got the design capacity.
