Modders Make Star Wars: KOTOR 2 Complete

Next news
1:51 PM - September 30, 2009 by Marcus Yam

Meatbag.

Many regard the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as the best game based on the George Lucas-created universe to date. Some also regard KOTOR as one of the best PC RPGs of all time, crafted by genre-masters BioWare in Edmonton, Canada.

While a KOTOR sequel was inevitable (and much demanded) thanks to the superlative original game, the development duties fell to Obsidian. Although Obsidian was a capable of delivering a great KOTOR follow-up, deadlines and other pressures marred the product. The end result was a rushed an unfinished game, and it showed.

In fact, it showed so well that the unfinished bits were sitting on the final gold master disc that was duplicated for retail sale. Despite all that, KOTOR II was still one of the best RPGs of the year, but we couldn't help but wonder how much better it could have been if there was simply more time.

Now passionate PC modders have taken those unfinished files and have pieced together the unused files (and created some new content to fill in the holes) for a more "complete" Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords experience.

This is the first release of the open beta, but if you have a hankering to go back to the Old Republic, check it out here. (You'll need a full copy of the game too.)

I really need to give KOTOR another go. I was a Jedi Knights Fan and couldn't stand how slow KOTOR is. The only RPG i truly love is FF Tactics.

The modding community is a major reason I find PC gaming appealing. While it slashes the player base at times in multiplayer games. Mods like the JA+ mod and movie battles mod in JK3 really brought the game new life.

Yeah, I know what you mean. You feel almost a sense of sadness and loss when you get to the end of the game because you know there is nothing more. I can't wait to check this out!

I played it but was not impressed. It just didn't scratch the right itch I suppose. It was a fin game and all, just not my thing. I am personally awaiting Mass Effect 2 instead.

Nice job but I couldn't even get myself to play KoToR2 past 5 minutes. I finished KoToR1 twice though.

Yeah, storyline-wise the first one was way better. The no lightsabers thing in the second was annoying, cause as soon as you finally were able to make yours you find like another five around the next corner.

I played the first one for like 5 days solid till I beat it and eventually played it again. I played through the second in like a month...

I hope this makes it better...

Hopefully someone just makes a video of this unlocked content. This way people with the Xbox version can see it too.

KOTOR2 had the best story. It looked at the force in a different way that I haven't seen before, and tackled the Jedi faith in an objective, unbiased way. The ending was definitely rushed, though. Bioware or Obsidian (I'd prefer Obsidian) need to make a KOTOR3 instead of a lame MMO. By the very nature of MMOs, The Old Republic MMO is going to ruin everything that made the KOTOR games great. No deep character interaction with intricate characters, no turn-based combat, no sense that YOU'RE the hero of the universe. Instead you'll just be some nobody acting low-level monsters for a year with stunted progression and minimal excitement because Bioware will want you to be addicted and shell out more money month after month.

Thanks for the link, I may have to load up KOTOR 2 again. I thought both were good and still own them. The ending of KOTOR2 was empty but other than that it was good and I did not think it was rushed.
KOTOR one was more buggy and crashed much more than 2 did. I played them on 2 different machines too.
I agree they were great RPGs but I also think FF XII was really good too, same style game play, three characters but you could customize the characters (auto-fight) in FF XII much more than in either KOTOR. I still have Baldur's Gate 1&2 that are aged but still good.
Looking forward to Dragon Age, big time, I just hope they don't try and milk us on this new game with mini expansion packs, kinda like what Fallout 3 did.

Now this is news!
I loved #1, but I couldn't get the feel for #2.
I just may go and buy #2 and get the finished content.

It seems like it would be a lot of grueling work, and likely all unpaid also. Hopefully these guys all landed a high paying job within Obsibian or BioWare.

  • PC gamers have numerous good titles to enjoy this holiday season. The titles that top our list this year are "Call of Duty," "XIII," "Max Payne 2," "Halo For PC," "Rise Of Nations," "Deus Ex: Invisible War," "Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic," and "Madden 2004." "Call of Duty" was previewed by THG game reviewer, Weston Patch, at Quakecon 2003, where we told us that it was a title to keep our eyes on. The end result of this title is stellar, and it is perhaps one of the most interesting World War II games of 2003. While the graphics in this game are top notch, it offers a much broader range of system requirements range than many of the other games that we have seen this year. Still, it should not disappoint gamers and has become a huge hit with gamers who like this game genre. You can read our full review of the game here . "Rise of Nations" is an excellent real time strategy ("RTS") game that delivered a huge wallop at its release and continues to remain a strong favorite. "Rise Of Nations" was selected as one of our Editors' Choice titles this year, and continues to be a game with long play value. You can read more about this game in our review of it here . If you seek a game that offers pixel shaders that can push your new graphics card to the limit, we suggest "Deus Ex: Invisible War." This game has incredible dynamic lighting and bump mapping effects that will give your DX9 graphics card a good workout. "Knights Of The Old Republic" pushes the Star Wars saga to new heights with some great vertex shader effects and pixel shader work on the light saber, which provide this game with a unique look. "Madden 2004" is still the best of the best, as far as sports games go for the PC. The reflections in the visors and the blades of grass that are visible on the playing field showcase the programmable shader power within this excellent sports title. A Screen shot from Halo for PC. While the reviews of "Halo for PC" were quite mixed due to the hefty system requirements of the game, "Halo for the PC" is one of our favorite games this year. The incredible bump mapped effects, as well as the dynamic lighting, make this game look significantly better than its originally released Xbox version. However, we only recommend this game for those with PCs that exceed the system requirements recommendations by a large margin in order for the game to deliver its best performance. Still, if you have a system that can run this game at its recommended highest levels, you will encounter a game that offers multi-player mode (this was not available in the original Xbox release), plus several new weapons and additional levels not found in the original Xbox release. We still stand by our claim that "Halo for PC" is an Editors' Choice title, and is a game that you should own if you have a system that is capable of running it well.
