The UK isn't exactly spoiled for choice when it comes to 4G LTE service. Though telecoms watchdog Ofcom held spectrum auction that saw multiple carriers acquire spectrum to roll out LTE service, Everything Everywhere remains the sole provider of 4G in the country. The company has had its network up and running since last autumn after receiving special permission to repurpose some of its existing spectrum for 4G. Now, Vodafone opened up a little about its 4G plans, and it looks like customers will be waiting a while longer for 4G plans.
The Guardian reports that Vodafone has confirmed that it will be delaying its 4G roll-out for another few months. The network was previously expected to roll out its 4G LTE service in May or June. The guardian cites Vodafone as saying its 4G launch is now scheduled for the end of the summer.
"We are convinced our own 4G will be better performing," said Vodafone's chief executive, Vittorio Colao, is quoted as saying. "We want to be able to launch it when it's really ready. End of the summer means when there is going to be a good commercial window for launching it."
Vodafone's goals for 4G are high, though, and the UK isn't the only country it's working on when it comes to 4G service. The company apparently hopes to build 4G networks to serve 40-percent of its network in its five biggest European markets (including the UK) by March of next year. For now, you'll have to sit tight. You won't be alone, though. Three UK has said it will be the end of the year before it rolls out its 4G service, while O2 has promised more details of its 'mind-blowingly aggressive' roll-out this summer.
