Fujitsu and the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications announced a joint-development of the world's first ultra high-speed optical fiber switch with optical amplification features. The technology uses nonlinear optical effects of the material, and so far was good for speeds of 640 Gbit per second.
According to the two organizations, the optical fiber has potential for 100 times or more the amplification capability of a conventional device and switching speeds of more than 1 Tbit per second. (THG)
