iOS Code Confirms Longer Display Rumor for iPhone 5

With Apple's next-generation iPhone announcement coming in a matter of weeks, the rumor mill continues to buzz with information regarding the device.

Last week, an iPhone parts company released a video detailing differences between an iPhone 4S screen and an alleged iPhone 5 screen. Now it looks like the iOS simulator application may confirm the video's story.

For a while now, the device has been rumored to feature a longer display while keeping the same width. Most rumors estimated a screen length of approximately 4 inches, with a resolution somewhere in the 640 x 1136 range.

Thanks to some tweaks made in the iOS simulator application included in iOS development kits, 9to5mac may have just proved iOS 6 is set for a taller display.

After running the simulator at the rumored resolution of 640 x 1136, the application revealed a home screen with a stretched set of four rows of icons while on the current iOS 5.1 platform. On the other hand, switching to the upcoming iOS 6.0 resulted in a home screen with five complete rows, which can be interpreted as confirmation of Apple's testing for a longer iPhone display.

Although it seems as though all evidence points to a longer iPhone 5, we'll have to wait until September for official confirmation.

But, but, but, I thought a 4x3 screen aspect on a 3.5" screen was "perfect"??? Are you now telling me that it isn't? My brain hurts.

    That's never gonna happen.
If you look at Apple's history of screen resolutions (in phones, tablets, laptops), they always multiply the previous resolution by two. That's one of the reasons for the "overkill" in the iPhone's retina display. Anything above 250dpi (non pentile of course) is perfect to the eyes. The reason they got to 960*640 is that it was exactly twice the 480*320 of the previous gen iPhone. As for the iPad (2048*1536 instead of 1024*768). It's an easy way to keep compatibility with older programs, and avoid layout problems. The same happens when you run an iPhone app on an iPad (you can zoom x2 the application, and it doesn't even fill your iPad's screen).
So, I'm afraid that a new aspect ration for the screen would be a bit too revolutionary.

The largest company by stock evaluation in the world's flagship moneymaker... When GM or Microsoft or Samsung release new flagship products, do we not get butt loads of rumors for months??
