O2 has announced that it too will be offering its subscribers free access to WiFi on the London Underground. The news is a result of a deal O2 has struck with London Underground WiFi provider Virgin Media.
Virgin Media began rolling out WiFi in London's underground Tube stations in June 2012. It started with King's Cross and Warren Street. Then Oxford Circus and Green Park were added, along with Victoria and Euston stations. Virgin originally promised free access throughout the summer and through to the end of the Olympic Games. Then, in October, Virgin announced that it would continue to provide free WiFi through to the end of the year. The company said WiFi would remain free for everyone throughout 2012 and, in 2013, Virgin customers would retain free access to the service.
Since that announcement, several carriers have signed deals with Virgin securing free access for their subscribers, too. Vodafone and EE (and, by extension, Orange and T-Mobile) customers can avail of this free WiFi thanks to deals signed with Virgin and now O2 customers can join them.
"We’re excited to bring free Underground WiFi to O2 customers this summer," said Gary Booker, Head of Consumer at O2. "Our customers want to stay connected wherever they are and will soon be able to check their email, update their Facebook status, shop online, book their next holiday and stay connected to their friends and family right across Tube stations in Central London."
Free access will kick in in June, when all existing O2 customers signed up for O2 WiFi will be automatically registered for free WiFi on the Underground.
