O2 UK Launches New Music Subscription Service

UK wireless carrier O2 today announced the launch of a new music subscription service. Dubbed O2 Tracks, the service aims to deliver top 40 music directly to users phones. O2 Tracks will give users access to the Official UK Top 40 right on their smartphone. Chart tracks, as well as a changing selection of curated playlists, will be available for a subscription payment of £1 each week (if you're on O2).

According to O2, the app will update itself overnight (via WiFi) and new tracks will replace the ones drifting out of the charts. Songs will be stored on the users phone, which means they won't need to be connected to WiFi or 3G to listen, but is a subscription service, in that they won't get to keep the songs unless they cough up the extra cash to buy their favourite tracks.

"O2 Tracks allows you to access the most popular music directly on your mobile and for better value than ever before,"  said Sally Cowdry, Consumer and Marketing Director for O2. "O2 has built a heritage with music and offering exclusive experiences. That’s why our customers can enjoy two months free. Even after this promotion, our new app means you get the entire chart for little more than the price of downloading one track."

Already available for Apple and Android users, O2 has promised support for Windows Phone and BlackBerry in the coming months. New users will be afforded either a two-week free trial (non-O2 users) or a two-month free trial (O2 customers). After your free trial period expires, O2 and non-O2 customers can expect to pay £1 per week or £4.99 per month, respectively.
