No PvP Mode in Diablo 3 at Launch, Says Blizzard

On Friday Blizzard's Jay Wilson said that PvP will not be a part of Diablo 3 when the game goes retail (in 2Q12). He said that PvP Arena and its systems aren't living up to their standards in its present form, thus it will be released in a patch following the game's debut. The team felt this was a better option than delaying the entire game and punishing those who merely want to enjoy the campaign and core solo/co-op content.

All of which is just about complete, he adds.

"When the PvP patch is ultimately ready, it will add multiple Arena maps with themed locations and layouts, PvP-centric achievements, and a matchmaking system that will help you and your team get into fairly matched games quickly and easily," he said in a blog. "We’ll also be adding a personal progression system that will reward you for successfully bashing in the other team’s skulls."

Many fans will undoubtedly recognize his uses of hints in the blog, throwing in phrases like "just about complete" and "soon you'll be having a blast." The blog indicates that development is about to wrap up, and even recent reports have slated the PC-based action-RPG to land on April 17 or April 19, depending on who you ask. Officially Blizzard plans to release the game in 2Q12, and so far there doesn't seem to be any signs of a setback.

Still, there may be many fans who will be disappointed that PvP won't be available at launch. "We know a lot of you are looking forward to PvP, and we’ll be focusing our post-launch efforts on making sure the Arenas are as brutal, bloody, fast-paced, and awesome as we know they can be," he said. "In the meantime, we’re in the process of putting the finishing touches on what we think is a truly epic campaign and co-op experience for launch."

Despite the delay, Wilson points out that players will be more prepared for battle once PvP Arena makes its debut, as players will have had plenty of time leveling characters, finding items, learning the classes, and perfecting builds. To some degree, maybe postponing PvP Arena was a good idea after all.

"We’ll have a lot more info to share on the PvP system in the future, and we look forward to the moment we can get the game into your hands," he said.

why would you buy a game that you know is already busted? You have to keep hopes up that they will release the PVP later and not say "we can't get it to work, oh well".

Ironically enough, they say they are doing it so they don't punish players, yet the players that enjoy PvP are being punished. So many games are being released unfinished, and sadly enough, developers still haven't caught on to the fact that games DIE because they are released unfinished.

I guess some fans will want PvB (players vs. blizzard) and vent their frustration by tearing down a fortress of blizard, age of empires style.

PvP was always such a broken part of Diablo as it was. Tweaking a game around PvP mechanics usually makes classes less unique, as things are brought in line to make each class less powerful against an opposing counter-class.... i.e. WoW Cataclysm. Cataclysm was the decline of WoW in my opinion, as hit points and mana scaled so largely that all abilities were brought in line across the board. Every class had sustain, every class had heals, etc. I prefer that a game like Diablo make the PvE the 'main' part of the game and let PvP fall in where it can. You are just left clicking or right clicking your mouse on a person after all, LaWLZ

This game was never about PvP. You had strong single and co-op mode. The game itself was always still great.

Some of us don't want Diablo 3 to be re-manufactured WOW. If you want PvP, play any of the cliché MMORPGs out there.

Well PVP is not much really, if Co-Op will work, this is what i really will appreciante in the game.

I really liked this decision, at least now i have hope in playing the game, i'd love to see the campaign and play it in cooperative.

And i don't think that they will be punishing anyone, they will just be releasing the game sooner without a feature that is not necessary for playing the game... and later will probably add this feature.

But what i believe they did wrong again is announce stuff before it is ready, if they didn't announced that the game had pvp, noone would be sad with this notice, people would actually be happy that there will be a PATH for that new feature.

They just are saying too much, and much sooner, they should wait for the right time, before doing so.

Not sure if I would bother Diablo 3, but Torchlight 2 seems pretty good as Diablo 3 alternative and it is only $20. Playing Torchlight 1 now, very enjoying.

What you're saying doesn't make any sense. PvP isn't being delayed, it's just not ready. Releasing Solo and Co-op as soon as they're done and not waiting doesn't 'punish' anyone. Delaying their release wouldn't make PvP finish any faster.
