Microsoft: That's OK, We Still Make More Profits

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer not rattled by Apple's overtake.

This week's stock market showed that Apple had finally climbed over Microsoft to become the world's largest tech company in terms of market capitalization. While that sort of thing could worry Microsoft, CEO Steve Ballmer isn't worried at all.

"I will make more profits and certainly there is no technology company in the planet which is as profitable as we are," Ballmer said to the Wall Street Journal. "Stock markets will take care of the rest."

"We are executing very well," he said. "That's going to lead to great products and great success."

Now there's a rumor that Steve Ballmer will be joining his Steve-counterpart at Apple's WWDC on June 7 for some sort of announcement. Could there be enough room on the stage for such a bold, Steve duet? Apparently not.

I just read, while going #2, a shampoo bottle that sounded a lot like Apple. 9 out of 10 people PERCEIVE a thickening EFFECT.

Notice those distinct key words? Apple is a closed minded company, with a holier than thou attitude. Like god blessed the ground they walk on.

Microsoft releases Software (and peripherals [minor hardware]) and Apple is OS and Hardware (overpriced I might add), and iTunes store...

And Microsoft still makes more money than them. Suck it Apple.

Who bought an OS people like my parents can use WITHOUT having to spend a rediculous amount of money, it sure was not apple. Microsoft may get knocked, but they did allow people to afford a computer. My parents don't need to spend $1000 on an apple laptop when a windows installed one for 400 will do the trick. All do to mass market of microsoft.

This all stinks of little kids shouting out 'My Dad's car is better than your Dad's car!'...

To be honest I don't give a crap about which company makes the most money. What I care about is who offers me the best products for the lower price to my own pocket.

Although now that Apple has surpassed MS I would like to see the DOJ even things up a bit and apply the same priciples that they have attacked MS with over the last decade. Lets see how Apple handles such negative and consistant press.

"there is no technology company in the planet"

Anyone else think that's why it seems like some of them have their heads buried in the sand sometimes?

Its not surprising for a company that charges $100+ for a product every computer has to have. (if purchased separately from the PC, it is cheaper for lower priced retail PCs) Sure you could use Linux, but not if you want to actually use your computer to do things like play games and run popular software.

No, it's perfectly reasonable. For quite a few years now that statement will hold true, even if Apple surpasses them in profits. Unless Jobs has a giant underground lair. Not quite a Bat Cave, an Apple Core? Well played, Ballmer, brilliant choice of words.

Shouldn't they be allowed to charge for their legitimate work? Why don't you work for free then?

Microsoft and apple are both doing horrible things to the tech industry. Microsoft already got their asses handed to them by the DOJ. Until the DOJ reins in apple, BOYCOTT APPLE!

Are you suggesting that because every computer has to have it, it should be cheap or free? Sounds similar to the 'argument' people use when they try to justify stealing copyrighted media.

Please point me to the Microsoft store where I can buy a microsoft built PC.

If I were microsoft, I'd start building clean looking PCs, calling them something French, and have these art school kids pay $4000 a piece for them.

For the record, I'm also a programmer and know the impact of free.
Thruth is, some basic, low-level stuff should be free.
You make money with doing something with it.
Hope you get it.
Linux is a goldmine now. No not selling linux!! Making programs that WORK on LINUX where there aren't commercial/quality-counterparts for.
Or make a tripple A game ALSO available on the Linux platform.

@SchizoFrob (and others with this sentiment): "Although now that Apple has surpassed MS I would like to see the DOJ even things up a bit and apply the same priciples that they have attacked MS with over the last decade."

OK, based on what? Apple isn't the market leader, they aren't stifling competition, and multitudes of options from other vendors are available for anything they offer. What, exactly, do you want the DOJ to get involved with?

@joytech22: I dunno, IBM? Digital? Xerox? MSFT? Your question doesn't have one answer. What's your take?

Here is an interesting link, although there may be better:

I highly doubt Microsoft has higher profits than Apple. He's probably thinking more of total revenue, which doesn't mean anything if you have more expenses.

They have higher profits. About double of what apple brings in. It was in the wall street journals article. Try reading the article that they are talking about.

1. mobile safari.
2. Dictating what programs you have to use to create iphone apps.
3. No screen asking which browser you would like to install on osx
4. Cutting deals with distributors that hurt the competition (kinda like the intel rebates when they were screwing AMD)

Thats just off the top of my head

I've been telling people all along that Microsoft has a better P/E ratio than Apple, which means that Microsoft's earnings are nearly 60% greater than Apple's.

What the market cap numbers mean (other than perceived value) is that if the companies ever wanted to go private, they'd have to pay through the nose to buy back their stock. Apple has no chance on Microsoft if they ever wanted to make that move.

I'll agree with that...Apple makes an integrated product that works well for most basic tasks. I think they've done a fantastic job in the design department and in the marketing department. I still can't stomach the limited system (less programs and applications, no games, etc) and the price, but for some people, it obviously works.

In which Ballmer is the Boss.
