Genetic 'super Rice' Promises To Resist Almost Everything
Bangkok (Thailand) - Thailand is genetically engineering a new form of rice that can resist almost everything short of a nuclear attack. Ok, maybe it's not quite that tough, but scientists at the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology say their new rice can take three weeks of flooding, excessive saltwater and even fend off bugs and disease.
Flood resistant crops are a very big deal in the region because countries often suffer from severe floods from the monsoon season. Thailand is the world's largest rice exporter and the super rice is currently being tested in Northern Thailand.
