Crysis 2 Supports 3D Singleplayer, Multiplayer

Cevat Yerli, CEO of Frankfurt-based Crytek, told USA Today that Crysis 2 will support 3D for both singleplayer and multiplayer. The news came in a pre-E3 2010 interview that covered the industry's gradual support for 3D. Yerli blames James Cameron's Avatar for the new movement.

"The success of 3-D movies like Avatar and the introduction of 3-D TVs from the hardware manufacturers tells us that this is the next big movement in entertainment, much like HD was years ago," he said.

As of this writing, Microsoft has yet to officially announce support for 3D--the Xbox 360 is one of three platforms (PlayStation 3, PC) that will play host to Crytek's highly-anticipated shooter this holiday season. The PlayStation 3 is already fitted with 3D capabilities via a recent firmware release--supporting games followed just last week. The PC has been 3D-ready for quite some time.

But to be honest, 3D multiplayer support sounds exciting. Yerli drove that point home in his interview with the paper. "For games especially, 3-D gives gamers an increased level of immersion, which can enhance an intense experience like Crysis 2."

Expect a full reveal of Crysis 2 on Tuesday at 3pm PST / 6pm EST at the E3 2010 event.

UPDATE: Here's the official PR released this afternoon:

This afternoon during Electronic Arts' (NASDAQ:ERTS) press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Crytek GmbH, the award-winning developers of the Crysis(R) franchise, announced that Crysis 2 will also be available in true stereoscopic 3D. The blockbuster action game will be the first major video game on multiple platforms to take full advantage of true stereoscopic 3D. Crytek is recognized worldwide for being technical pioneers, as showcased in the universally-acclaimed Far Cry and Crysis, as well as their award-winning, proprietary CryENGINE(R) technology.

Whether played in 3D or standard 2D, Crysis 2 drops players into a devastated New York in the midst of an attack by a frightening alien species. The alien enemies are armed with deadly weaponry and exceptional sensory abilities that test players' skill and push them to the limit. These terrifying invaders stalk the streets of New York, leaving the streets in chaos and the skyline in flaming ruin. Surrounded by catastrophic destruction, players harness the superhuman abilities of the Nanosuit to level the playing field, becoming the ultimate weapon on a mission to save New York.

Built on Crytek's new state-of-the-art multiplatform game development system, CryENGINE(R)3, Crysis 2 will be available for the PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360(R) videogame and entertainment system and PC in 2D and 3D.

Full 3D?! Photo realistic graphics?! Surround Sound?!

Games are becoming virtual simulations for training out youth to be tomorrows killing machine. Yes, the shadow governments goal to train an army or desensitized killers is becoming a reality.

Fighting China in WW3, will be just like playing video games back home.

In order to run the 3D on PC you must have 16 Fermis running in SLI, with a combined heat output of the Sun, and then you can only play on medium at 1400/900 with average 30fps.

3D gaming especially on the PC...I hope we don't jump back to the era of 320x200 or 640x480 resolution just for the sake of sustainable 3D play.

Actually they aren't, they are becoming better looking, simple as that, no hidden agendas.

EA is definitely the shadow government that is training for world domination, because just being a major game studio is to boring.

Don't forget that eg. going from 320x240 to 640x480 quadruples the pixel count. So you don't need to lower the resolution much for having the same frame rates. On the PS3, 1080p games are changed to 720p in 3D mode.

3D games can be fun every now and then (not nonstop) so I wouldn't spend much to gain that ability. On top of that I'm one of those who don't feel fully comfortable with 3D, no headaches, but a small disturbance.
