Portal Designer Working on Exclusive Title for Ouya

Kickstarter-backed gaming console Ouya is set to go to retail in early June. We know gamers are interested in the machine, but what aboue devs? Well, Ouya today revealed some details about a title from Portal designed Kim Swift and Airtight games and if you needed convincing that they studio has faith in the cheap and cheerful console, the fact that it's an Ouya exclusive should do the trick.

Dubbed Soul Fjord, the game is described as a randomly-generated dungeon crawler with rhythm-based combat. It's set in a fantasy universe and combined 70's funk and soul and Norse mythology. So, dragons, wizards, disco, and 'fros.

"In Soul Fjord, you play as Magnus Jones, a legendary warrior valiantly slain in battle," Ouya teased in a post published this week. "When the Valkyries arrive to bring him to Valhalla, the hottest club in Yggdrasil, they reveal that Magnus has been left off the guest list–and won’t be invited to Ragnarok, the party that’ll end the world. Magnus must fight his way up the World Tree to salvage his reputation as the baddest Viking in town, and gain access to Valhalla."

Sounds ... interesting. The game has kind of a Cartoon Network feel to it and though the release date is currently unknown, there is a trailer. Check it out below:

When I see a cartoon based game I remember one of the best, Dragon's Lair....

The art style reminds me a little bit of Castle Crashers. This looks like it will be a single player game. It will be interesting to see how many games can push a quality multiplayer experience on the OUYA.

While there is nothing wrong with this game, they should be careful not to get branded as a kiddie console. As long as there are more serious launch titles to go along side with this, it should be pretty successful. If what's available on the Tegra market at the moment is any indication, MSFT & Sony will have some serious (and much needed) competition going forward.

I'm pretty sure Ouya exclusive means just that. They don't make money on the hardware (who can at $99) they will make it on the store and you have to buy from them for that to happen. Perhaps it will be ported to regular android later, but AFAIK a ouya game plays on ouya and not a shield etc...Android games probably run on it fine, but ouya games probably won't run on your X android device (insert name). Which makes sense if you're making money only on the storefront. You need that 30% fee to survive.

This is a pretty awful premise, Norse mythology and disco? The idea sounds pretty incoherent and lame.
