A New Wolfenstein Game is Coming This Holiday Season

A new Wolfenstein title is arriving this holiday season.

Can you smell that? It's the sweet aroma of E3 2013 and new games in the air, and Bethesda is cooking up a nice, juicy title you can sink your teeth into called Wolfenstein: The New Order. That's right: a new Wolfenstein title is in the works, and it's headed to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, next-generation consoles and Windows PC in Q4 2013.

The game is being developed by MachineGames, a studio established in 2009 by former founding members of Starbreeze Studios. Using id Software's id Tech 5 engine, The New Order is a re-imagining of the franchise, Bethesda said, without offering any additional details. Like Electronic Arts with The Sims 4 on Monday, nothing specific has been given thus far outside of the announcement of the game's development.

"We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere," said Jens Matthies, creative director at MachineGames. "As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud."

Although officially it wasn't the very first first-person shooter game released, the original Wolfenstein 3D established the genre in mainstream gaming back in 1992, and seemingly established a foundation that would be used in every game of its kind over the next 20 years.

Since then, a number of sequels and spinoffs have appeared, including Spear of Destiny, Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001), Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (2003), and Wolfenstein (2008). Wolfenstein RPG, a turn-based shooter for Apple's iOS platform, was the last in the series to be launched, appearing in 2009. Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein were the first in the overall series, served up as 2D adventure games released in 1981 and 1984, respectively.

In 2012, Bethesda celebrated 20 years of Wolfenstein 3D by launching an HTML5-based version online that fans can play for free in their browser.

The official announcement trailer of Wolfenstein: The New Order was released exclusively to GameSpot, which you can see below. Meanwhile, we have scheduled an appointment with Bethesda during E3 2013 next month, so we'll provide more hands-on coverage then.

    i love hendrix, but in a wolfenstein game? even trailer? i hope it's not all eye candy and no gameplay.

    "Return" was my first and only experience with the franchise back in late 2001. I enjoyed it immensely but never got any of the other variants. Just too much competition out there and not enough money to get them all (and time to play them). I'd like to revisit the franchise in an updated version with modern graphics though...if it can be up there in quality with the likes of Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3 (along with the gameplay).

    Except for the 2009 version (which basically flopped and Raven staff were cut) there were cross-platform versions that supported OS X and Linux. The source code was released for the pre-2009 games. One co-op version based on RtCW: http://www.rtcwcoop.com

    Last one was horrible and kind of played like Farcry 2 which was horrible. I want a FPS and I want to shoot Nazis!!

    Lets see if we get a decent game or another turd that aint worth the time from free-to-play systems.
    Just a short reminder to everyone: Make sure you get some notion about the game before you buy it. If you buy it first, dont complain after that its not good.
