Saygus Sets Pre-Order Announcement For Its V2 Phone
One of the surprises at CES this year was the Saygus V2, an Android phone that boasted some impressive specs. While it looks great on paper, we're still a bit skeptical about the device. However, the company seems to be going forward with production of the phone and is set to announce the date and time of the beginning of pre-orders for the V2 later this week.
The announcement will be on Thursday, Jan. 29, via the company's Twitter account, but pre-order registration will continue until 12 pm Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Thursday. Saygus also teased a few bonuses for those who pre-order, such as limited edition launch accessories and the ability for pre-ordering GSM subscribers to use their current SIM card on the V2. Unfortunately, the company still hasn't provided a definitive price for the V2, only saying that it's expected to be below $600.
The prototype at CES showed promise. Even though the phone used a Snapdragon 801 SoC and was running KitKat (Android 4.4.4), some of its other specs were impressive. The IPS display is 5 inches with a 1920 x 1080 resolution (445 ppi). Both the front (13MP) and rear (21MP) cameras will have Optical Image Stabilization and 60 GHz wireless HD video output, and there's 64 GB of onboard storage with dual MicroSD slots that support up to 256 GB of expandable storage. Additionally, the phone supports Multi-Boot, so you can essentially put another OS into the MicroSD slot and easily load it onto the phone.
Our skepticism lies in the fact that the company is just a startup. The specs on the V2 are impressive, but it needs a lot of investment before the phone can come to market. The buzz Saygus generated at CES might be enough to get the ball rolling, especially with pre-orders, but it's still unclear if Saygus can deliver on the final product.
