Kickstarter to Launch in the UK Before End of Month

Hugely popular crowd funding service Kickstarter has announced that the service's UK launch is scheduled for the end of this month. Four years after it launched in the United States, the site today revealed that users will be able to launch UK projects starting October 31. However, UK users can get a head start on things by planning and building their projects from today onwards.

Kickstarter said today that instead of having a UK-specific site, the UK projects will be listed alongside all the other Kickstarter projects. To get started on building a project, you'll need to click the "Start a new project" button on the Start page and then select the UK as your country. Though all UK projects will be listed in pounds sterling, Kickstarter will provide those outside the UK contributing to UK projects with the approximate conversion rate to US dollars before they complete their pledge.

Additionally, Kickstarter is streamlining the international shipping option for U.S. and UK projects. The update should make it clearer when the creator has requested that international backers add an additional amount to their pledges to account for shipping charges.

Why exactly does UK need this? Are they butthurt that the vast majority of online services is based in US and not in their Queen's buttocks?

Excellent. As I wrote in my blog, I think Kickstarter is simply setting the stage for an equity based crowdfunding platform in the US. See: http://crowdfundingnow.blogspot.com/2012/10/how-to-crowdfund.html
