Comcast licenses Microsoft TV software

Chicago (IL) - Microsoft has scored a major win for its cable TV software. Cable giant Comcast announced has licensed the firm's Foundation Edition 1.7 for up to five million customers.

Comcast and Microsoft today announced an agreement that extends an existing relationship between the two firms. The cable company said that it has the ability to make the Microsoft TV Foundation Edition 1.7 available to up to five million customers, although it has no immediate plans to do so.

The software is intended to be integrated as middleware solution on next-generation set-top devices offering access to interactive applications and electronic program guides. According to a Comcast spokesperson, the company runs a trial of the software in the Seattle area, but does not intend to "revolutionize" the technology nationwide.

Financial terms of the license deal were not disclosed.
