LaCie Intros Network Storage Solution for Families
Here's a good way to locally share files with friends and family.
On Tuesday LaCie revealed the CloudBox, an all-new network storage solution focused on family access. It connects to a local router by way of a Gigabit Ethernet port and allows users to access its contents from any location and on any device. It even offers UPnP support so that video content can be streamed to the Xbox 360, iPad or any network-connected computer and TV.
"Mom can share her photo albums with out-of-town family and friends by sharing a secure download link," the company said. "She doesn't have to worry about privacy or size limitations. All the files are under her full control. Plus, parents can create private folders to keep business and tax files safe from prying eyes."
According to the specs, the device features a 1 GHz processor and 256 MB of RAM. It can stream up to 60 MB/s and accommodate up to 10 users with passwords and private folders. Backup software for Mac and PC is also included so that users can keep their personal files safe and secure should they experience a laptop, phone or tablet crash or loss.
The CloudBox provides two ways to store files: family and private. The Family folder allow users to share photos, videos, music and other content with anyone in the home by simply dropping the files into the pre-created folder. Private folders can be created to store sensitive private data like financial documents and tax files, but these folders can also be accessed by other users if permitted.
"For families that are always out and about, the LaCie CloudBox ensures they can access files from any network-connected smart phone, tablet or laptop," the company said. "They never have to worry about syncing the latest music download because the files are always accessible."
To access the files on-the-go, LaCie offers the Wuala app for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.6 or higher, Linux (Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives), iOS and Android.
The LaCie CloudBox, designed by Neil Poulton, is now available in 1 TB ($119.99), 2 TB ($149.99) and 3 TB ($179.99) capacities through the LaCie Online Store and LaCie Resellers.
