The MythTV Convergence: Unofficial Plug-ins

TapeWorm

With a name like TapeWorm one can only expect some manner of parasitic behavior - but in this case the parasite is entirely benign. TapeWorm leeches MythTV recordings from the backend server and copies them for playback elsewhere later. Why the name, then? Because TapeWorm does not use the MythTV API for negotiating these transfers, it is considered a parasite.

Winmyth

Like TapeWorm, WinMyth is a program constructed to make use of MythTV backend recordings on a Windows PC. It obtains listings for recorded shows and live television listings to make a frontend out of any participating Windows computer on the same network.

These two entries reflect a small amount of interest in joining MythTV capability with Apple products - namely the Powerbook and iPod. However, these two inclusions alone are powerful examples of a best effort attempt to extend MythTV to all kinds of clients.

Remote Remote

Remote Remote makes MythTV audio content accessible to Mac OS hosts to provide playback across a local area network, and enables remote control from an Apple PowerBook. It was born out of the need to network a fast computer without a CD player to a slower computer that did have a CD, but now finds its role more as a type of glue between MythTV and portable Apple notebooks.

Myth2iPod

Simply stated, myth2ipod is a PERL script for MythTV that creates podcasts from personal television recordings and provides complete or selective library subscription. This plug-in is definitely more complicated to configure and use than other MythTV plug-ins, but offers users a service that MythTV otherwise lacks.
