Nvidia GF106 Chip For GeForce GTS 450 Leaked

by - source: Tom's Hardware US

Another Fermi in the pipe.

Nvidia is set to roll out another Fermi-based product to fill out its product lineup. Spotted on Chinese rumor site ZOL is the GF106 which is supposed to power the GeForce GTS 440, 445, and 450.

Impressively, ZOL managed to secure an actual chip shot of the GF106, which measured an approximate 15.2mm to 15.7mm across.

According to the report, the chip was supposed to launch this month, but has been pushed back to September. Pricing is expected to be in the neighbourhood of $150 to $170, at least for the GTS 450, and it'll be open to custom designs from OEMs.

Last month, the blueprints for the chip were leaked at another Chinese site.

nVidia! Keep pushing your launch dates and Southern Islands will push you out of the market.

curious what the price will be and how well it performs.

...or, you could just buy a hd5770 now, like most people have done in this price range.

September? That's too long! I think its pushed back mainly because of the success of the GTX460!

GTX460 SLI would beat GTS450 SLI any day. So if you have the budget go for GTX460 SLI day. Equals HD5970 and costs $100 less!

If it is priced like the 5770 and performs like the 4870/4890, then it'll be one hell of a card.

...there's a much larger difference in price then that. The GTX460 1GB SLI can be found for around $460, while the HD5970 is still closer to $690. In most cases there's over a $200 difference.

Its no longer news. Its leaking instead. So much more exiting when its drip drip out of a corner somewhere.... Not really. Just a sign that there is no news worthy news out there. So they are scraping the bottom.

Ok in about 4 hours crazy Charlie is going to tell you how this chip sucks, is going to tell you he scooped the size. Say all the same rhetoric he has been spewing for years. Then all his parrots can debate how he's right. A regular Nostradamus.

Whos betting nVidia will price this $20 more then its competition and offer no clear benefits?

Hmmmm I wonder how many shaders it will have and the texture as well pixel fill rates will be? 192bit

Good. Maybe the 5770 can have some competition before they EoL it for the 6770.

For a month or two anyway.

singly, they go back and forth, with the GTX470 a little faster on average. Dual card, the GTX470 beats down the 5850 like mad, and even gives the 5870 a good run for less money. In addition, nvidia has less troublesome drivers. While the bugs might be about even, the usability of the nvidia drivers is far better, and it recognizes dual cards far more easily.

I researched these two cards, the GTX470 and the Radeon 5850, for about 3 months before I finally bought a GTX470. I certainly wasn't wrong. I've got mine overclocked to 775 with no problems, giving almost the same performance as the GTX480. I plan on buying a second when I get the money together.

Once again a big chip to compete against a much smaller chip. :heink:

GF106 = 230-245 mm2
Juniper = 166 mm2

I wonder what the transistor count is?

I expect whatever it is that it will initially be price competitive as that is the only tool nV has left, like ATi with the HD2K/3K series.

I would be surprised if it significantly beats the HD5770 simply because that space is already high-sided by the GTX460.

Also strange that they're going to miss the Back-to-school timeframe for delivery, although I expect some of those PR-launches soon to try and keep back-to-school shoppers from buying the competition and waiting instead.

But at least they're getting new models out, and this is somewhat of their typical timeframe if you calculate it from GF100+X instead of likely original planned launch date. Usually it's launch + 6 months for the mid range and low end for nV.

Check back with the latest drivers. The GTX 470 is now capable of performing on par with the HD5870 at max settings 1920X1200 in many DX10/11 titles, and in some cases even manages to outperform the HD5870 by a significant margin. Then there's minimum frame rates to consider, which the GTX 470 wins in almost every instance.

...but even on Nvidia's initial beta drivers, the HD5850 never flat out outperformed the GTX470, so I'm really not sure what benchmarks you're referencing. In a few games, you might also notice the GTX480 performing dangerously close to the HD5970.

No one who wants to do gaming with any level of enjoyability gives a two-bit about these products.Current gaming STARTS at 2x GTX 460's in SLI, or a single HD 5850, and goes up from there.

Buddy, I'm running a single 5770 right now, and it can max basically everything I own. I don't really care that you 'enthusiests' can play Crysis at 20fps faster than I can. Good for you. The 250 is exactly what I like - it's cheap and gets the job done. Not everyone has $800 to spend on graphics cards alone.
